Last night on my way from Cumbria to croydon a wan**r ran into the back of my car flat on at around 10 to 15mph while I was sitting at a red light! I was fkn fuming and was only stopped from killing him by the presence of my 5 yr old daughter.

There isn't any noticeable damage but the exhaust tone had definitely changed on the left bank. What other things are likely to have been damaged that I can't see?

Also my nice quiet engine is now ticking like mad! Could a rear shunt damage the engine???

On a funny note though when I got back in the car my daughter who was asleep at the time piped up and said

"I shit myself coz I thought it was a giant hale stone!" Normally I wouldn't have been happy at all with her language and she would have been told off but it did put a smile on my face:biggrin:

She recently had a bad experience with hale stones on the way from school when they hit her in the face, she was convinced the rain was trying to kill her and walked to school the rest of the week with her cycle helmet on!

Are the tailpipes still in the correct position? Could you maybe have had the exhaust shoved backwards and caused a break in any of the pipework?

Clicks and ticks in the bay can often be manifold/turbo/downpipe leaks. Stands to reason if the exhaust was pushed hard from behind, that force could have gone all the way to the manifolds/heads.

I'm pretty sure it's an engine rattle, sounds a bit like a tappets rattle

ur tappeta ant going to tick if you had a shunt but some metal stress caused by the rear shunt could of fractured somthing upfrount and now cause a rev relatted tappy noise or ticking if say somthing is now loose

That's the kind of nightmare scenario that crossed my mind!! It did tick over like a sewing machine before I set off :scared:

Firstly glad to hear you and your daughter are OK mate.....

....But going back to the question asked, I would not have thought that a rear end shunt would effect the engine; hence the above sounds a likely explanation. Although even if the rear was just lightly hit, you need to check the boot floor panel for damage - and follow all the way along to the front of the car for signs of panels coming into contact with the ones in front.... You just never know until you look carefully in the daylight, how your car has been damaged!

Good luck mate; I hope you get everything sorted!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

would of killed him myself

If the ticking or rattling has started straight after the sent then I'd rule out tappets for sure, that would have to be a huge coincidence. If the exhaust has been hit then it could have done something to the manifold for sure. Get it to the body shop who will also have a service section, one will check the boot and floor plan and body damage and the service section can identify your rattle. Good luck and I hope your claim goes better than mine did

happened to a friend of mine, rear shunt cracked the manifold
