WTF do we pay our taxes for - only for the motorist to be targeted once again.....

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/10554415/Motorists-face-60mph-speed-limit-on-motorways.html

I sincerely hope it does not get introduced!! It's bad enough we have to crawl along at 50mph through roadworks when there is no traffic or people working; let alone be forced to drive at 60mph when there is no traffic around. That is a long section of the M1 to impose a lower limit for no good reason - and no doubt, if introduced, it would be enforced by average speed cameras.....

Start of a slippery slope. Europe sticking their noses in yet again! Motorway speed limits should be going up not down.

Yep heard this on the local news yesterday, looks like it's going to happen, I live right next to jc27 so this new enforcement will be right next to me, and I also use the stretch most weeks :(

Never let the facts get in the way of a good rant :hammer:

1) It's still open for consultation https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/m1-junctions-28-to-35a-maximum-mandatory-speed-limit so if you feel that strongly about it, use your democratic right.

2) Here's the doc https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/267632/M1_J28_to_J35a_MSL_Consultation_Document.pdf the idea is more about air pollution for the poor sods that live either side of the M1 around there than speeds. And the limit will be removed when the air pollution improves as vehicles pollute less...

interesting debate..and my thoughts are that then a congested stretch of road thats full of cars all nose to tail will increase polution levels given an engines RPM relative to its speed...in other words a car doing 70mph in overdrive will be zipping past with no hindrence pulling less RPM,s than a long line of cars doing 50-60mph in a lower gear resulting in MORE RPM,s = more polution.

They're changing the stretches of M1 either side of that into managed motorways (eg like M42 south of Brum) - that will increase the flow of traffic (which should please drivers) but also meanhigher capacity so hence more cars means more pollution. I s'pose they could cancel the managed motorways schemes and let the traffic jams slow the flow to zero...

My thoughts egg sack lee...no flow = no polution:D

I think the guy from the AA was talking about getting rid of old cars that that aren't as efficient and or produce lots of pollution...

Oooops... not good for the Zed !! maybe better to have a lower speed limit.. LOL.. :(

Motorways will look like this!!!

theres 4 drivers there that need the book throwing at them...driving with the hands off the wheel:nono:

"The proposals are part of an attempt to meet European Union targets for clean air"

If this statement is true then why do the Germans have the luxury of having the lack of speed limits on the autobahns?

Because the uk is the only country stupid enough to be dictated to by "Europe" look how the Spanish behave or the French they do not play by the rules. It's just us suckers.

This country gets its friends around the world by purchase in the form of overseas aid and taking it up the arse by the rest in the form of dictated conformaty and being the "yes sir" bunch....Our choices of parlimentry rulers are nothing more than a shamble of limp wristed gaylords who class anyone who speakes louder than a whisper for the real people of this country as thugs and shall remain out of reach of any form of media speaking chair. Its money and media people thats at the top of the food chain who in turn feed the polititions a slice of the cake who in turn keep the dices stacked in favour of the money and media people so to keep a ruling perpetual machine....You and me are just nothing more than lowlife who on a daily basis are calculated how much freedom we can have without getting too much that would enable us to get cocky and make us think that this is actually a good feeling and we need more freedoms and rights of passage.

Quite right mate - I did imply in my opening post that it was still a subject up for debate! And I of course do understand that it is (allegedly) for the benefit of those living around the M1 with regards to reducing pollution. However, the M1 has been there for (50-ish?) years - just like Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted (perhaps not so many years re the latter), et al. At the end of the day, you pays your money you takes your choice; this is a small island with a good motorway network - it is unfortunate for those living on the side of the M1 (etc) but if the powers that be can see fit to make a futile gesture to try and improve the quality of life for those already living near the M1; yet still insist on blighting the quality of life for a whole new section of the public with a white elephant like HS2, there is something wrong!

And that in itself is a good idea - it worked on the M25 in Surrey; hence it was extended into Bucks/Herts and onto other M-ways like the M42. And that particular section of the M1 does have the "managed" status already, I believe. However, just like with the M25 and M42, reduced speed limits are imposed during times of higher congestion; not a blanket 60mph limit from 7am to 7pm. And certainly not 7 days a week - early Sunday morning on the M25 and M42 sees the variable limit (and cameras) switched off; imposing a blanket 60mph limit when there is no traffic congestion is just not right.

The one on the far left is looking rather pleased with himself....what's he doing with his hands?? :detective:

here here....Anyone with an out spoken opinion in any walk of life is usually considered a "Bully" I know this from personal experience  As long as this attitude is acceptable then we don't stand a chance of making a difference because the many wont listen to a (thug). the internet has given the every day man or woman a voice the only problem is that genuine opinions and ideas get lost in the all the do-gooders crap and then so ignored....... I think? This was a party political support statement on behalf of the ilefvkthesystemeverychanceiget party

Trouble is I feel the system is run for the boys and those in power are out of touch. Most are professional politicians not experienced and intelligent members of society.

So they don't understand average joe, they don't even know what it means...the whole country is dictated to by London, that's fine except things that are suitable there arn't somewhere else. This becomes difficult where farming, fisheries and hunting are concerned. Were now in a state where You cannot carry a perfectly legal 3" folding knife "a tool" even in the right scenario without having to justify yourself.

Things are going backwards, the rich are getting richer the poor poorer. The country is really not a democracy but a bunch of gentlemen a clubs keeping the cash in each others pockets.

Youth unemployment is soaring, the education system isn't fit for purpose and your chances in life are becoming far more dependant on daddies bank account and golf buddies.

It's ok though because you will get a speeding ticket for doing 80mph on an empty motorway at 4am and the guy down the road that makes his "living" of robbing grannies and collecting your tax paid benifits to fund his crack habit will get a suspended sentence for his 200 offence record.

Arghhhhh when in emperor there will be some serious moving about and a large cull of societies drains and black holes.

The soft in the head loonies are ruling the country and making a damn mess, no wonder why the scots want out.

Sic Vic pacem, para bellum :2guns:

What a brilliant sentiment.

I have another..........."Si Minus Cum Illis Ridere Inridere"

My own and roughly translated means "If you can't laugh with 'em. Laugh at 'em"
