Been busy the past few days building a carport. Really pleased to finally have the zed out of the rain. & I've got a place to hang some of the signs & license plates I've picked up on my travels. My wife thinks the side of the house now looks like a scrapyard, which is good cus that was the look I was going for . Got a set of traffic lights to go up aswel. Just got a few bits to do to finish it all off.

Haha! Don't do it in California, the state troopers will hand your ass to you!

We've hired 2 motor homes that didn't have front plates, quite lucky not to get pulled then. That's why I thought you didn't need them.

Hahaha! If ever I head that way and take my Z with me, I am going to roll round on UK plates. It's a RHD too, so should get pulled over quite a lot!

Depends what state they were registered in.

No plate required then. You can drive it in other states that have the front licence plate law and not have to fit a front plate. They are definitely required in California, but not in Arizona, the next state on. I did have a list of which states required front plates and those that don't.

A great way to travel in the US, any excuse for a pic, this was in Yellowstone.

Vanity plates are fine, again providing you don't require a front licence plate. One of my friends has a 'Z' as a front licence plate. Your friend will be ok with that. :)

Correct he will! Some people however register their cars out of state for tax reasons and sometimes to avoid having a front licence plate if they have a second or family residency out of state. A friend of mine in Missouri registers his car in Mississippi so he doesn't have to have a plate on his Z32.

Quite a bit of hassle just to avoid needing a plate but well worth it I think!

It's not so bad. It's very different than it is over here. Some states are really easy, those with no vehicle checks. California for example has something called a smog-check. It's basically the same as our emissions test that we have carried out on cars over here for MOT purposes. They're quite strict in some states like California. It's a yearly check and is part of the registration process, whether you're renewing your tag or getting a new one. Other states, like many of the southern states and by southern I mean the bible belt, the regulations are very relaxed. Many other states have no smog-check and most states don't require any type of yearly inspection at all either. You can literally pull a car out of a junk yard, register it, insure it and drive it.

So when you 'register' your car at the DMV, you're effectively taxing it to be driven on the public highway.

In addition, licence tags can expire if you don't renew them. You have to re-register, you're then issued a new licence plate or set of plates, if you're buying a car, you have to register it whether it be new or used and guess what....you have to get a new set of licence tags from the DMV. You may notice some little stickers on the tags you have which show that they're still in date or haven't expired - that's effectively the tax and is a levy paid through the DMV. If you've ever watched American cop shows, you'll have heard the term 'expired tags'. Expired tags is like running around with no Tax and/or MOT.

As you can see, I spend far too much time in the US! lol

....I am sure Bri will confirm that with me. Don't think I've got any of that wrong.

yea spot on Si... you can or could apply for an extension of time on an expired "tag". Going to the local DMV and getting your picture taken after standing in line for an hour or so enabled you to walk out with a new or re-newed driving licence which i thought was pretty cool. BTW i knew a few places that would smog your car for $20-$30 in the hand and ime sure its still rife over there:wink:
