Transmission problem? Been driving her every day for the last month with no issues got in today and noticed a whinning sound coming from the auto transmission was fine yesterday does this mean its on its way out or could it be a top up? I know that gearbox oil shouldn't really get low unless theres a leak, this has just happened overnight which I find odd, hoping its something simple and not a gearbox :(

Whining noise from inside the car? Quite common... Check for wife or girlfriend in passenger seat! :)

Have you checked the fluid level on the autobox? It has its own dipstick iirc at the very back right of the engine bay almost under the scuttle panels.

Haha! Its from outside ok will check levels thanks quavey :)

What oil does it use?

ATF Dextron 2

You could drop the sump off the gearbox and clean the strainer out, if your mechanically minded.

Check that the fluid is red and doesn't smell burnt. If your not sure when the ATF was last changed it would be a good idea to drain it and refill. You might be lucky and have a drain plug on the pan. If not then you have to remove the pan to drain the fluid. Once drained check the little magnets for signs of metal shards. If you do need to remove the pan then I'd put a new gasket on when you put it back on. MJP in our traders section will be able to provide one.

hi, ive checked the oil and it doesnt smell burnt, its level and the oil is red-ish in colour. so that must be ok. ive drove it home now and the whinning noise has gone. so no idea what that was maybe something got stuck? i will for peace of mind change the autobox oil and clean the swarf magnets as well just to be on the safe side, thank you all for your help.

Check you dif oil level too, as mine whines when cold, fine when warm ( The dif that is not the gearbox)

Same as a manual gearbox, undo the side sump plug and the level should be upto the hole of the bung.

Ok update I dont think this is gearbox related as I got in it this morning and while in idle the noise is present also when you rev it goes along with the revs alternator possibly?

could be thrust race (bearing) or clutch/pressure plate rubbing something?!

worth having a look, see if you can look in where the rubber boot is.

Spray some WD40 in the alternator and on the spindle of the pulley ( not on the pulley or belt) see if it helps :thumbup1:

Yeah ill try that, where abouts is it? lol ive done a lot to this car, but not so much engine wise all ive done is the plugs,

oil , filter and fuel filter and some vac hoses. but anything else looks a total nightmare in there, very tight! do you mean spray WD around the alternator housing? as in the holes in the housing? it does sound like the alternator. would a autobox make that noise in park and while reved?

One more thing, ive this leak where the ECU is located, and was curious if anyone else has had this problem? do you think it could be the battery tray area? ive changed the targa rubbers for a secondhand pair i had and they tend to let water in onto the seats. but not if i park it uphill its ok. is there somewhere i can purchase new targa seals? ive tried various rubber solutions to try and make it swell up but doesnt swell enough i think its just wear and tear, apart from that and my whinning sound she's starting to come together.

Thanks Groover, ive checked all drain holes and all let water out down by the lower wing-sill section so i think i need new rubbers. as for the alternator ill give that a go tomorow. apparently theres a diagnostic code thing actually on the gear box that you do a sequence to get the codes. i know how to do the ECU one, but apparently this test can tell you if theres something up with the electrical side of the gearbox. ( apparently) will check that out too tomorow. no doubt ill be back.

I'm sure Jeff diagnosed this for someone not long back?? Sounds exactly the same. Or I may have been dreaming

There should be a little lever on the front of the gear shift knob. Press this down and you'll be able to move the stick.

Yes there is but wont let me move the shift unless ignition is fully on and I press the brake thats the only way which messes up the diag process
