Hi peeps,

ok, had my Zed for 5 days now.

Got my tax, 2 new goodyear F1's on the front and it's booked in with Jeff on Monday for a week to be well and truley pampered.

Should be getting Cam belt, water pump, oil & filter change, Thermostat & TB clean, then it's gonna get a brake upgrade Bremo pads and discs on the front and new discs with kevlar pads on the back. New brake hoses all round, then a little tidying up of the underside of the front drivers wing. Finally some locking wheels nuts and a nice Engine clean and detail.

Ok, I aready have stuff mentioned at the bottom.

After watching Stuarts home video's (no, ther other ones ):p, I've decided that I really want traction control as my next mod.

I'm currently running at 315BHP.

Would anyone like to persaude me to upgrade to something else first or am I thinking on the right lines of grip first then ease the power on ?.

Please treat me like a new Modda as I have owned a 7 series beema for 5 years and never even opened the bonnet. I earn quick, so don;t be affraid to over load my CPU. ;)

There are lots of things to do really.

Chip it, get the boost up with some new intercoolers. ;)

Also, get some new brakes on the car first but you want something bigger than the Z ones so you need 17inch alloys min. ;)

Personally,

I would sort out things like tie rod bushes, suspension bushes, if they need doing that is.

When I got mine last year, I spent no end of time and money, just sorting out all the little niggly problems like, missing targa shades, clearing indicators, aligning lights and all the other things that generally p1ss us off as Z owners.

I would also make sure that centre bearing and gearbox mount is ok, and also change your gearbox oil. You will not believe what came out of mine. Put it this way, it didn't look like oil. More like treackle with sprinkles. However, I can report that the box is smoother than somothing smooth, so good job there Jeff.

Will be booking it in with you soon for some more work.

Good luck Stuart. You won't be sorry you bought one of these. Just make sure you maintain it religiously and you should be ok.

LOL, Sorry Mike, it was supposed to read I learn quick, but I guess you figured that one out for yourselves.

OK, so traction control is a no no for now ?.

I don't intend to get bigger wheels just yet. As I'll wait until I need new tyres (just had them replace so give me a couple more weeks :D ).

When I get new wheels I'll go for skyline brakes at the same time. Probably not for a while I gotta save a fair bit.

In regards to servicing I intend to do an oil and filter change every 3000 - 4000 miles. Anything else that you would advise I do and if so what timescales ?.

Do you guys all use semi synthetic or something else ?

Stuart

hi stu,

I change mine every 3000 miles, Im using mobil1 at the mo (cos I got it free! ;) ) but a decent semi synth would be fine imo, esp when changing that frequently.

as for tc- its up to you really, if thats what you want then get it - I plan on adding it next (once iv paid for my other mods  ) perhaps we should see how much for a group buy ;)

I think all would agree to make sure other silly bits & bobs are done 1st.

see ya sunday

Hi Paul,

I totally agree about getting the small bits sorted first before going forthe mods. It's just I was speaking to Stuart (Wigan) last night and he sent me a vid of his car after traction control was fitted, by watching thatand speaking to him about the way his car now handles I got all excited  .

Hopefully Jeff will let me know what else needs attention when he gets the car on Monday, if its not too much I'll get it sorted while he has it.

Looking forward to seeing all your cars on Sunday. I'll probably bring my camcorder as well but it's not a digital one :( .

Stuart

I would get the traction control for sure.

You can always ask racelogic themselves for a reduction, they offer about 20 percent off if you agree to put some window stickers up(look rather nice on the small back windows) and send them photographic proof.

rik

Traction control - you need to ask??? :D 300bhp going through the rear wheels on a wet day, turbos spool up, catch you out, oh well it was fun while it lasted what should I buy next....

I would suggest getting a thread going separately for a group buy on the racelogic system. The one you want is full adjustable with launch control - basically the top package for street use.

If you get in touch with GPS on 01942671239 and ask them for prices for a number of units etc. It is not difficult to set up at all....

HTH

CheerZ,

just my personal and extremely humble opinion on the full system .

I just have the basic stuff (=on/of) as I bought it to stop wheelspin "completely".

I see no sense in having a 10, 20 ,or 30 percent slip for street use.

It just isn't safe that way.

Just stick with the basic stuff, it works super and save your cash for other more worthwhile stuff.

I'd disagree.

I have been getting my car sideways out of junctions Magnum P.I style on 15-20% slip for over a year with no problems!

I used to hate having to drive it in the wet but now I look forward to it :D

It's the best fun you can have in a Z!...well almost! ;)

:D :D :D

Yep - NEVER used the full wet/dry settings unless the conditions are awefull - always have some slip - its a rwd car ffs lets have some sideways action ;)

I see your point Rik and agree that it insn't safe, but what is ?.

I would like to have the variable traction control rather than the on/off. It's nice to have 0% slip in the wet for safty reasons, but I wouldn't mind being able to set it to 30% slip to have some fun now and again.

Don't get me wrong I want to be safe, but I don't want to be boring at the same time.

I think the adjustable TC is perfect for me :) .

I'll give GPS a shout when I get home and get a price off of them. If they will do a group thing (oh-err) I'll start a fresh post and se who's interested.

Thanks for your help guys & girls.

Stuart

Why fork out a fortune on traction control when there's loads of other things that could be done first that would really improve your car or make it more reliable?

After all, the wheel spin you experience is closely linked to the amount of pressure you're applying to the right-hand pedal is it not? ;) Just go easy on it in the wet!

Not only does it give you a better understanding of the grip available to your car in treacherous conditions, but it makes you feel like Fangio when you've got some open road and lots of opposite lock.

I'm not saying TC is not worth getting at some point - i just feel there are many more mods i'd do before going all Captain Sensible.

NB: Must admit though that the first few times I got "on-boost" wheelspin unexpectedly were a bit of a surprise. Although probably less of a surprise to me than to the bloke in the car I overtook sideways!!!

LMFAO yeah I done that hehehe - more than once :D The problem comes on medium tight corners. As you come out in second gear, even if you are holding the speed by balancing the throttle, the turbos spool up as you come out and whip the back end round. Under most circumstances the 300 does go quite smoothly but I have known mine to 'snap' round sometimes and have just caught it in time. Thats when the TC really helps ;)

CheerZ,

alrighty, but I'll be lenghts ahead of you in my boring TT, while you are happely drifting all over the place.

And that regardless of your horsepower!!!

keep it drifting, I' busy myself overtaking you all:D :D :D :D

no offence meant ,of course.

cheers

LOl the only way to go is straight :D:D but sideways while going straight lol :D

Two things that I have noticed when people post about loss of traction/rear end.

Auto cars seem to experience this more.

If you have crap tyres the car will be dramatically different to a good set of tyres, ESPECIALLY in the wet.

Stuart, you have bought a quality tyre that is outstanding in the wet and you have a manual car. I would get plenty of experience driving it and then decide. I have only experienced unexpectedly losing the rear end when I had a set of cheap Dunlops on.

What tyres do you have on the rear?

  • Author

On the rear I have Falken 245/45/ ZR16 (2 months old).

I think the main thing I am worried about is wheel spins in 1st, 2nd & 3rd when I'm giving it some large, but this is in a straight line  . Would my Stage 2 Stillen clutch have a part to play in it, or would it be the fact that my gear changes are too dammm quick for the 300zx LOL (Doubt that very much).

I have decided to get the switchable traction control i.e. off, wet, dry, 10%, 20% & 30% slip and launch from racelogic. Which comes in at £725.

Can someone explain to me how launch works as I read the info on Racelogic , but friends are telling me differently.

Stuart

Before you think about spending money on traction control, try it with decent tyres on the rear. IMHO Falkens don't fall in to that category.

You will be surprised just how much difference the tyres will make. The Missus has driven mine when the pressure went down to 20 P.S.I. in one of the rear tyres and she said "the car feels all wobbly".

  • Author

Really ?. I thought Falkens were supposed to be one of the top tyres. They were recoomended to me by a senior member of this forum.

So If I had Goodyear F1's on the back, you think this would be much better grip ?.
