It says this on the descripton of this forum section..... and I always did want to ask (though no doubt it was asked many years before I owned my first one)

So, in actual fact.... Do we own a supercar?

Compared to when it came out then yes. By today's standards, no..

Not ever! Lol!

Not in most peoples eyes (apart from Z32 owners lol). It was never a real "supercar" IMO. No real bad thing as if it was then most of us would never afford one even now!

It was a fantastic car and still is IMO. But think of what was out and classed as a supercar back then..contach then diablo, testarossa, F40, F50, mclaren F1 etc

Still, nice do dream! :D

I Spose when you look at its competitors at the time, which is what's relivant... The z32 was launched to compete with porches 928 it did this very well. It was often compared to the cheap Ferrari as a low cost and more daily friendly alternative.

By modern standards, if an equivalent Nissan was to be made it would have to be comparable to the latest 911, and an alternative to the cheapest fezza.

There is Infact a current v6 twin turbo Nissan, approximately the same cost (relitively due to inflation) as the z32, the r35 which although the skyline boys call it the new skyline, Nissan do not. It's the GTR. The z32 was 1990s flagship Nissan today's flagship Nissan is the r35 the two share a lot in common conceptually and market wise. If you want to know the answer ask yourself what is the GTR now....

That's what I think compares to the z too, as you say they are both the flagship cars of nissan

Heh heh, we have had this debate before........

....Many years ago!!!

My opinion is along the lines of what Paul and Mr Bolt said. When the Z32 was launched it was Nissan's flagship model and could easily hold its own against the Porsche 928GT, Merc SL500, Jag XJ-S and Ferrari 348. Whilst the Z32 was billed as "Japan's first supercar" it was not really in the supercar league when compared to the likes of the Diablo, F40, Porsche 959 or (by 1992) the XJ220 and Mac F1. Although the term "Hypercar" had not been coined in those days - which would have been a more accurate description of the aforementioned exotica; much as we'd class things like the Veyron today.....

....So I'd have used the phrase "Junior supercar" to describe the Z32 back then; and I reckon the term is still fitting today:wink:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

its a working class super car. and if your pushing near 500bhp its got super car performance

Was made to be a 911 killer and it did this very well, was called Japans first supercar and it appeared in Supercar magazine. Could also beat a Testarossa to 60. That's enough for me.

All of which seem to have a higher current resale value than the Z32 (apart from possible the XJS which has a wide range of prices but seems more comparable) which in itself may answer the question then

It was British snobbery at the fact it was a Nissan that killed the Zed off in the UK.

In someways it's like the Ferrari Dino would you class that as a supercar yes it had a ferrari badge but wasn't fast that's why most people don't class the zed as a supercar yes it is fast but it's the fact it had a nissan badge that hurt it abit as steams said

I drove my car yesterday for the first time in nearly seven years. to my brothers mot station. i got two miles down to my local petrol station got out and even the women behind the counter said what a lovely posh car i was driving then before i could drive of some radom bloke got out his phone and was taken pics of my car. now if thats not a super car then what is it. and whats more seven years in the making it felt super to me.

It's always nice when things like that happen.....

On our trip out last Sunday, I stopped to refuel at the Shell garage in Epping and one of the staff on duty came over to admire the ZX - he even did the filling duties for me. All the time talking about how nice the car was!!! He was surprised to learn it was a Nissan; and did not believe me until he saw the little Nissan logo on the lower left corner of the rear window:biggrin:

Whilst I've not been to Epping for a while, it still seems to be a very nice and affluent town; so super cars would not be an uncommon sight there.... Especially if Rod is in residence:wink:

Do I think a 300zx a Supercar - No

but...There is no strict rule on what makes a supercar, one mans supercar is another mans Sports or GT car.

The term Supercar is just a media invented term anyway, and the 300zx was denoted by a lot of Media as "Japan's first supercar" when it was launched.

well yes in a nutshell from my view the zx is a supercar, its a CAR and its SUPER good at pi$$ing me off almost every week with yet another thing to fix,lol

Love it!!! Made up for you mate, you must of been well chuffed

Spot on there dave, there's no defining line to call a car a super car. So by that token if the media hailed it Japan's first super car, that is quite simply was it is. I personally think of it as a sports gt. With it being an fr layout, my personal feeling is that a super car is a mid engined car. That's personal though, nothing more.

This is a fair comment and a worthy one to the discussion

My car also turns heads whenever and wherever I drive it

I've also had cars alongside with someone hanging out the passengers side taking pics.... so it must be pretty damn super to have that effect :tongue_smilie:

I have had a similar experience too - a few years ago I took my red ZX to the Lake District on holiday. We were driving over the Hardknott Pass behind a family in a Renault Scenic or the like; and their teenage son was hanging out of the window filming the Zed as we (carefully) ambled along!! I searched YouTube for a while afterwards to try and find the video - as I never got the chance to stop them and ask for a copy!!

Shame, it was a nice sunny day and there were no other cars around - so it would have looked pretty cool!!

To me a supercar is any car that predominantly turns the heads of 10 year old boys along with the occasional adult who knows about cars. I've owned mine for two days and already lost count of how many people stop to watch it go past. Everyone has their own arguments but I won't hear anyone tell me it isn't a supercar!
