WOW, Your a Trigger fish!!! I`m only a cleaner shrimp :( LOL......lOVE LOVE LOVE my Trigger Olly!!! hes my fave fish ever!! sooo bloody friendly and active, hand feeding and stroking him now :) he loves it

That rating system is baloney IMO, there's people will full amounts if points (great white) that are fairly clueless just post loads. Picasso trigger isn't it ? On the phone, wifi went down earlier ready for the move tomorrow.

Triggers and puffers are pretty intelligent fish, if you get an emporeor after a few years he will also be a character.

Yep Picasso trigger! he`s lovely, very colourful , to be honest I've not seen a nicer one around in all the fish shops I've visited :) ... most look a little washed out and dull? I suppose once they are happy and in good water they will blossom slightly?

I`ve heard the Emperor's can be a bit destructive after a while? but I've also found that the Marine game is sooo contradictory? UV? or not UV? SKIMMER NOT SKIMMER?? NO POX, NO POX hahaha

There's a lot of discussion about UV in tanks and whether you need it or not. Basically a UV light deforms free floating algae DNA structure and stops it developing into algae (green water) it won't really stop algae forming on the glass though. A UV can also help remove other harmful stuff from the water, however the water needs at least a few seconds of exposure to the light. I've got one on my 450L tropical tank but I couldn't really say how effective it is as I've never suffered from green water in that tank. On the other hand I've also got one in my pond and that cleared the water from being like a pea soup to crystal clear in a week. So they definitely work. Mr Bolt will be able to tell you if you need one for your marine setup.

Protein Skimmers remove excess protein in the water which can be seen as what looks like an oil slick on the surface. The excess protein can cause problems with creatures that are sensitive to them (My shrimp for example). It often comes from food waste etc and I thought that they were more or less essential on a marine setup, Again, Mr bolt will be able to advise you better on marines.

Hope that helps you dude :)

I do have a skimmer and UV and my water in normally pretty good, the only thing I`m struggling with is my Hawaiian box fish :( he`s forever in and out of quarantine as he gets lots of bacterial infections on his whole body?? every other fish is fine, just him

Yeah, you get better coloured individuals, it's ultimately genetic, localised populations etc, but partially dietary. This is more pronounced with freshwater fish, some supplier where they are mass bred are dire, you may have noticed some nèons are super colourfull. Beyond this diet will help you achieve the best colours your particular specimen can attain, it's worth noting that intense lighting helps, fish colour is donated by reflected light, think of fish scales as prisms.

Emperors are well, part of the large angelfish group. Kings of the reef, some of that group of fish are snotty enough to get agressive with divers. In terms of aggression it's less aggressive than the Picasso will be as an adult, they are regularly kept in large reef tanks with carefully selected corals, it's one of those fish you take your chances with. There are plenty of lovely angels which are reef safe and smaller, but that's not the point is it lol.

You are right of corse, loads of conflicting advice. The problem is everyone's an expert, often on subjects that don't have a right or wrong answer. Over time you will work out your own ways and sniff out the bull shit. It's always worth checking said experts tank thread, if their tank looks crap their own advice isn't working so well is it lol. The best advice I can give you are the three following points.

Research, research then research again.

Nothing good ever happens fast.

Keep it simple.

These three things have always served me well, the amount if guys you see rush rush rush, pouring in chemical x y z only to fail, a little fore thought can work wonders.

Yeah sounds about right, box fish are notorious for bacterial infections, they stress easily and succumb to infection. Check he isn't being picked on, they are slow and often get picked on by fast moving fish. The trouble is if he's in and out of the display he's likely to re infect quite quickly once reintroduced. Think giving a patient drugs then throwing them back in the dirty ward, reinfection isn't surprising.

If your going to run a system with mostly large fish done of which are known to be a little easy to succumb, tangs etc an appropriately sized uv may well be a beneficial addition. It's no miracle cure but it helps even the playing field. I don't personally use one, I quarantine my stock and the uv would be fairly useless to me.

Ok mate thanks. He seems great in the display tank and looks very happy, but seems to get harassed by the cleaner wrasse! It`s not as if he tries to get away, he seems to like it? he`s not getting bitten, the cleaner just squirms around him rubbing bodies together, (and bit like znut and steamer do in bed with baby oil ) I`m told :D..... he gets on with everyone else...the symptoms are like someone has thrown a few tea spoons of flour on him on his back and fins, normally 3 days with some Seachem cupramine and its all clear?.... I feel sorry for him, as the quarantine is next to the display and he just sits at one side peering into his evicted home haha

Thanks bud :)

LOL - it's the swear filter Daz - put a space between the words as in "salt water" otherwise it thinks you are typing tw@t (as in saltw@ter)..... Just like if you try and type that town on the NE Lincs coast known as Sc\/nthorpe..... It registers a rude word and computer says no....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
