Hi guys, need some help in assisting a fellow zedder who has fallen victim of a main dealer continually changing part in the vague hope of curing what sounds like a single lifter noise problem

Right 1994 UK manual chap bought it with what was described as one sticky lifter that was occassionally noisy.

After all manner of oil changes and flushes done at his local Nissan dealer the problem pesisted, so on their advise all 48 lifters were changed at a cost of £2200 !!!!

Guess what when he picked it up?..........yep it was still ticking!!

9 months and a whole lot of legal threats and papers have done nothing (Nissan have some big unbeatable legal department) so this guy is now down a load of cash and still has the problem.

He is looking for one final attempt at curing it and if not will give in and sell!

My thought`s were possible coil binding on one valve???? or maybe a blocked oil gallery to the lifter??? however the problem is occassionally not there.....any idea`s anyone cured a similar problem. thanks chaps in advance.

PS I might add I have only dealt with this guy on the phone so are taking the facts and description of ticking from him.

Noises.... hmmmm.....

Have the springs been changed on the intake cams for the variable cam timing? Blocked oil gallery is another possibility although I'd have thought flushing several times would have cured that. It could still be a sticking lifter though - if they are not handled correctly then you can end up with all kinds of problems - do Nissan know how to handle them??? LOL

Presume you mean 24 lifters? I thought one lifter per valve.

Maybe he should check the exhaust gaskets to the inlet side of the turbos also and at the manifold to head area. If a gasket is gone it can make a tick tick noise at tickover as it blows slightly.

The tell tale is black sooty marks at the joint but this can be hard to see.

Just a thought

ah!! jeff my friend now this might be a stab in the dark but just bfore my engine went boom it was doing the same symptoms as said car i thought it was a sticking valve!!

have you done a compression check?? cos i was getting slight crankcase pressure and the noise was coming from the rear passenger side cylinder!! the rear works the hardest to push out the gasses to the turbo!!!

now i hope this makes sense!! no laughing now!! IS IT ONE OF THE PISTON RINGS THAT HAS BROKEN??? giving that slight rattling sound???
