are you running upgraded turbos and what do you reccommend

I'm probably in the market to upgrade my turbos (and no one seems to advise me about this on my 'lots of white smoke' thread if you want to read the history)

So politics and recent events aside........ do you run upgraded turbos on your Z and what would you advise?

Personally I am after maximum acceleration rather than brute power, if that helps to narrow things down...... so something that will spool super fast and give it a damn good kick is what I want!

So far, from advice, GTX 2860's have been reccomended

Before anyone points it out.... Yeah I know to get the full benefit I would have to upgrade induction/intercoolers/injectors/exhaust but I am considering now the best turbo upgrade to give the max out of future upgrades to support them, if you get the idea.....

Other than that I will refurb my stock turbos instead and upgrade them later once I've done the rest of the work (and hopefully get some money back on the refurbs)

decision time......

Im running GT525's, which is basically stock turbo shell, ground out to accept a larger impeller, spool up is pretty damn quick, with also better BHP to go with it (check Z1 motor sports website)

have a word with Silverline (Steve) he gets them from the US and can advise exactly what you want.

Personally i wouldn't bother fixing your standard ones and then upgrading later... would be a wasted expense.

Cheers guys

I had already chatted with Silverline and had a price on the GTX2860s

Not cheap - but to be honest the cost of refurbing even one of my old ones (the other seems pretty sound TBH) turned out to be just too much to make it a sensible choice

So on recommendation from Silverline, and Mark on this thread, I've bitten the bullet (although it was someway over my intended budget) and my car is having nice shiny new GTX2860s fitted next week which I hope will finally put this problem to bed for once and for all

May as well get my nice shiny Zeta-Rs and adjustable tension rods fitted while I am at it, they have been sitting here in the box for a week or so

Will be ready before the Blackpool Illuminations run

That just leaves the Rocker Cover oil leak and cracked viscous fan problem to fix

Anyone got an official 'Nissan Moneypit' badge for sale lol :helpsmilie:

As long as you have run it by the wife it'll be fine...........................you have haven't you :tt2:.

yeah u will need 5 bolt down pipes and Braided oil line kit to

Rich are you keeping the stock Manifolds or going to get some of the MSP/AMS ones ?

Cheers Mark

Silverline Steve also sorted the the parts needed to fit them

I'm keeping the stock manifolds on for now just to keep the cost managable, intending to upgrade those when I get my spare engine rebuilt and fitted as it is another good time to change them

Before that it will be a remap with the new turbos fitted, then next stage to be induction, intercoolers & exhaust

After that onto the spare engine.

This is not gonna be an overnight upgrade... expect it to be a project planned over a long period of time as funds allow, the idea being to keep the car on the road as much as possible while work progresses

Guess I should start a build thread with lots of pics as the project begins

Rich

Wouldn't upgrading the intercoolers be a pre-requisite when running performance turbo's, otherwise any map would only be able to tap part of the potential power, also did the engine get rebuilt with forged internals ? as your going to be putting a lot of potential power through an old unit.

 and then some...

Yes is the answer, however dicky already said it's just not financially viable right now. It can be done later. A good stock vg can hold 5-600hp just fine, conversely a bad one can't hold the 300 it started life with. There's guys in the states running 7-800 on a stock bottom end! As you rightly point out though a rebuilt block with the supporting hard wear will be FAR better and more reliable.

stock bottom end is strong enough, I'm running one at the moment ... held up the last race, compression is still good so let's see how it lasts.

that's 630rwhp at 1.5bar

Yep, got the point about the budget but for a cople of hundred extra he could maximise the mapping performance and cost by adding some upgraded SMICS and allowing the Turbo's to breathe properly.

Either way that car deserves a good motor!

Guys - I hear what you are saying about upgraded SMICs and manifolds and I totally agree - all this was in the planning, the idea was to do the induction exhaust injectors to get the best out of my stock turbos, then upgrade the turbos when I get that other engine rebuilt - and I expected to take a year or more to do that

Either way the car was gonna need at least two remaps, remember at the moment it is overfuelling

However - recent events have tipped my hand so I am going down the route of upgrading the turbos now, I realise I won't get the full benifit from them yet, but it is the only sensible way forward other than risking more second hand tubs! Because of that I have over stretched myself financially making this decision - so the other nice things will just have to wait a little while even if it is just a few hundred quid.

Once done I will get the car mapped so it is running best as it can with the turbos....

After that stage two will be Induction, SMICs, Exhaust and it will need another remap I would think

Then third stage get that other engine rebuilt, fit larger injectors and the AMS manifolds then drop it in and a final remap

To my understanding that seems a reasonable approach given my current starting point and keeps the car on the road most of the time

Rich, it would be good to see how each stage after a Remap improves the performance, a handy bench mark for any rebuild, mod project...think a build thread is in order.!

SteveE

Yeah I totally agree with that and the car is gonna need probably three remaps minimum as the project evolves..... so this shoud provide some interesting figures for others

Build thread coming up - supervised by Silverline if that is OK with Steve as he is without doubt the expert

Went down and had a good and long chat with him today in person, reckons we could hit a lot of BHP in the end...

Never know maybe Noz would even give me a little discount as things progress in the interests of research

I'm along for the ride, so to speak! Let's see where we go
