Can you select a different COM port within Conzult settings?

I am not really up on PC's but if your usb port is COM1 them would your serial port be something different? say COM2

As I say, I am not really up on these things but I seem to remember having a similar issue with my Data-Scan software.

check: control panel- system- hardware- device manager- ports, and see what COM port is available and select that you can go advanced and change the port to suit the app (if the app only defaults to COM1).

Virtual ports are a nightmare and rename themselves all the time which causes havoc with conflicts.

if you find out what code 5 means it might help, ie- port already open, not found....

i've just re-read your post.

if it's a serial lead on the conzult and you dont have a serial port on the laptop then yes, you will need a USB-serial convertor.

Every time you connect a different consult or different USB to serial it assigns it to a different virtual port

You could try removing and then reinstalling it again (Conzult that is..) I had the same problem Bri, but mine was caused by the lead not being fully inserted at the usb end..

Will try that too Dave..cheers mate

I remember trying to test someone else's conzult on my laptop, they had bought a new USB converter and couldn't get it to work. Every time we tried a different combination of the 2 consults and 3 converters ( and possibly different USB sockets ) it added one to the virtual com port. We had to check the com port conzult was looking at was the same as the virtual one the laptop assigned and change them to match.

I also think I remember having to install the converter drivers separately for every USB socket or I had to remember to use the right one

Kind of mate...its now connected with a little help from the puter geek young lad next door but freezers on certain applications..i dont know what he done but it took him 2 hours trying to find a port that would accept the connection with the serial to usb addapter.Very strange as my last system that was from DTA never had all this hassle

My serial to usb addapter want to use COM 8 , on this port i dont have this error msg (cant use this com, or something like this) , but i cant find any ECU so i cant connect and get data , yhh :/

Just to add my 2p to this conversation. You should be aware that not all Serial/USB converters are created equally ;-) The DTA ConZult will only work correctly with a very limited number of converters. Something to do with how bi-directional data is "interpreted" by the chip inside the converter. Unfortunately I can't give any concrete recommendations as to which convert works 100%. When I used to sell ConZults I sold them with our own converters which were tried and tested. However, I've just noticed that the supplier we used has closed down and I haven't got any converters left to give you or check for a model number. My best advice is to first try and match the com ports (you can set the comport from withing the settings menu in the ConZult software) and if that fails try a different converter. One more thing, always install the converter drivers which are specific to your OS version BEFORE you connect the physical converter to a USB port. Do it any other way and Windows will try to use a generic driver that definitely will not work.

Znut - the fact that your software is functioning and then hangs during certain checks/phases indicates to me that you've got a date transfer problem - probably best to try a different converter.

All the best,
