I have a couple of vehicles with 'private' plates but are currently on SORN & not mot'd. Is there a way to transfer number without going to the expense of MOT & any associated repairs to make donor cars roadworthy?

Featured Replies

It does not say that in the link, it says the vehicle has to be of a type that needs to have a valid MOT to transfer the number.

And I can assure you IT DOES need a valid MOT to transfer a number from any vehicle that is of a type that requires a MOT'

Read it again:wink:

Must have been a friendly lady at DVLA when I last put a plate in retention then. MOT had certainly ran out, but I paid the cash and got the retention certificate.

Site says "You may be able to retain it if the MOT ran out less than 12 months ago".

Transfer requires MOT.

This is spot on right.

can you transfer number from a non Mot'd car to retention, then later on transfer to a 'new' vehicle to avoid this regulation? I'm guessing not!

If the MOT ran out less than 12 months ago then yes you should be able to put the plate on retention. You can then assign the plate to any car you wish to if it doesn't make the car look newer than it actually is. IE you couldn't put a 13 plate on a 99 car. You couldn't put an H plate on a G plated car, and so on.

If it's an ageless plate like mine (YIJ5666) it can be assigned to almost any vehicle.

That's not actually what I was asking but what you state is correct.

It DOES NOT need a MOT.

Just has yo be of a type of vehicle that requires an MOT. read that link again ;)

Having transferred my private plates to and from several cars over the last 15 years, I can confirm that if the donor car is over 3 years old, then you DO have to have a valid MOT certificate in order to retain or transfer a number plate. The only concession is that DVLA might, at their discretion, permit a plate to be transferred or placed on retention if the latest MOT certificate only expired up to 12 months earlier - but certainly no more......

Edit...

.....And I believe only if you were the registered keeper when the last MOT (and tax disc, if that too has expired) ran out!!

Yep, always had to have a valid tax disc too, whenever I have transferred or retained mine.
