The zed I might be buying tomorrow is really nice and I'm looking forward to it. But the owner doesn't know when the cambelt was done but says the previous owner was an enthusiast and a mechanic. How much does it cost generally for a cambelt change?

You will have to change the water pump, hoses and anc belts at the same time so will need to factor in the cost for that too. I think Zedworld were charging around £300 before

Yes get all the stuff Sir Charles said plus I replaced the tensioner pulleys as well, also replaced the stubby pipes at the side of the thermostat housing, they will probably crumble when you take em out, replacement silicone ones are only £6

I know I won't be attempting it lol it looks like a giant pain in the ass!! I'm still going to get the car and drive it as little as possible. Save up the cash and get it done. He cars a bargain so it justifies it I suppose

yeah and a good reason to take it to Zedworld is that you'll also get a health check by people how know these cars.... and that is gold dust...

Id say about 300 to 400 quid is about right, the parts themselves will make up nearly half the cost. Plus the cost of coolant and a stat, sealant and maybe some perished water hoses you may encounter whilst in there.

If you are having aftemarket parts be VERY CAREFUL with the part number of the water pump, as the Z31 and Z32 pumps both fit, However the Z31 has less impellors on the back and will not move as much water.

Part numbers which are ok are; QH QCP3343, ADL Blueprint ADN19135, BGA CP18482, Nipparts N123031

Part numbers NOT TO USE are QH QCP2831, ADL Blueprint ADN19112, BGA CP18116 and Nipparts J1511015

If you are getting a little garage or a non zed specialist then please ensure they are using the right bits.

If your average parts monkey goes into a parts system at your average parts shop and bangs in a water pump for a 1991 300zx they will come up with a Z31 pump, the majority of garages will normally just fit it because it fits. It will go on, and it will work......just not as well as it should!!

Hope this helps.

EDIT TO THE ABOVE THE Nipparts number ok to use is J1512045 the N number i put there was a solid auto number, which is also ok to use.

I have just had a reply from zed world and it will cost me almost 800 but that's the full works including auxiliarys etc. it's what I was expecting but I don't exactly have that to play with at the moment, and don't wana take it to a back street garage. Best save like mad and not drive the car very much

I must add that the parts come to 500 so it's just the parts the are the killer. Actually a reasonable quote and having the reassurance that professionals will be doing it

spelling mistake

Every single one of my Zeds had a proper, detailed (and photographed) cambelt change by Jeff / Zedworld and that's money well spent. Without it, you risk a lot more expensive noises! Look at some of the rogues gallery pics Jeff's found over the years (last one was damaged pulley, IIRC?).
