Hello everyone,

I am picking up a 300zx in the morning but it has the following issues and I was hoping to find out how critical they would be??...

My issue is that the gear stick is very loose, there is a LOT of movement in it, like 3 or 4 inches side to side even when in gear. Is this the linkages??.. And could it be brought back to life?

Gears don't crunch but in 2nd and 4th there is a slight scraping/grinding noise as when driving... Perhaps gearbox oil?? This is silent in 1st, 3rd and 5th.. Any ideas??

Any help is much appreciated!! Best, William.

it more likely to be the bushing in the gear leaver its self thats gone .. giving loads of slop ...

this make be all so the coarse of the crunch of gears

Might be a loose heat shield resonating in 2nd and 4th

I would say the gearbox would make noise in every gear if it was low/empty. It's probably just the fact the bushes need replacing and in those gears it's holding it at an angle where it grinds. First thing to do on Monday is call Mike at MJP in the traders section and order the parts, he'll know what your after and if its going to solve the problem. When you come to do the job check the gearbox oil level. Personally I wouldn't change the oil until the problem is solved in case the box is scrap as you'll just waste money.

Thanks for the info Eggs. I will get in touch with him tomorrow! I have a 200m journey home so I think it will be a case of 1st 3rd and 5th as I granny it back home. It has never jumped out of gear so fingers crossed that will solve it and there hasn't been too much damage done already... I'll be gutted if it needs a new box.

When you buy the bushes(cheap) change the rubber cover boot for the stick as well. These split and make the box sound noisey.

all of the above...

and here is some light reading fro you... http://z32.wikispaces.com/Factory+Service+Manual

did you used to have any hobbies before you bought the Zed?

and let me assure you that it is "used to"... :)

I saw a great quote once that read, "300ZX, making owners mechanics since 1989"

Also check the rubber bellows under the gear stick. If these lift or perish, you'll hear the gearbox which sounds course without these rubber shields on. Have a look when you replace the bushings. They are a little awkward to get to sit correctly, but take your time and you'll find the noise will go. Mine lifted and I had the same problem as you. When I replaced my gear selector bushings, I refitted the rubber bellows correctly and the noise went away. You'll probably find it's more audible in 2nd and 4th as if the gear level pulls down, it'll open up the forward part of the bellows which are the part that dislodges most easily.

Thanks for the info guys! Haha love the quotes, funny you should mention hobbies, I used to have a girlfriend but not seen her in a while now!.... :p. Think I'll be hearing about that pretty soon.

The gearbox is bloody lovely now! New bushes have made it so tight! The old ones were.. Well there weren't any!

Also those gaskets were the noise cause.. One of them was back to front! And that was Nissan themselves putting that together after a clutch replacement!! Pffft.

I'll have a look through that manual soon thanks!

I wouldn't take my Z to Nissan if you paid me! ha! Most of them don't even know what a Z32 is. If I remember correctly, a few years ago, Richard Smith took his Z down to a some place where the local Nissan dealership were doing some sort of promotion there. Richard pulled up and the dealer came over and asked him what it was. Richard smiled and said 'a Nissan'! haha

Hahah amazing. Yeah, unfrotunately the previous owner lived way out in the sticks at st ives, and that was probably his safest bet! Wish I livcloser to Zedworld... I Should probably consider a relocation.

You're close to Jimmer though at PowerZed!...well, closer anyway. Not sure what part of Hampshire you're in.
