Zed in with a few jobs to do, one of which was "the brakes do not work", maybe found why master cylinder was only good for the bin!

That's scary!

Is that a rare occurrence in your opinion Jeff, or should we all be checking ours?

Think I will be having a poke around mine at the week end after seeing that.

More common than you might think, starts off with a little fluid leaking out of the back of the cylinder seals, that takes the paint off the brake booster and then moisture just seems to find it most likely from the water content in the old fluid.

Out of interest Jeff, do the big booster thing the master cylinder bolts too ever have problems when this kind of thing happens?

Well despite having leaks and corrosion so close to the output seal part of the servo they rarely seem to have a problem as a direct cause, however have changed a few servo`s where zeds display what seems a low brake pedal despite bleeding and new pads etc. in fact the output rod between the servo and master cylinder is adjustable and there is a setting in the manual for the correct level, this would suggest that Nissan assumed wear would take place in the servo and this can be used to take in for that wear and set the servo rod base position correctly. ( see diagram ) of course sometimes the wear is more than can be adjusted for and then replacement is the only answer.

Thanks Jeff. The new blue zed I've bought has no brakes that's all. The master cylinder looks rotten. Is it worth changing that, giving it a go and if that doesn't fix, change the servo?

When you say no brakes what is the exact symptoms pedal to the floor or to hard to press?

Jeff

Pedal to the floor. Nothing there at all. The car has been off the road for a few years too.

Is the cylinder full or empty?

Jeff

You need fluid to have brakes birdy. If the resivoirs dry there's probably air in the master as well now which means priming it. Pain in the ass.

Try filling the master cylinder, then bleed from the two points on the ABS unit in the boot on the right hand side under the plastic hump.

You may be lucky and that brings it back, you will need to investigate though where the leak was as its after the abs it will just keep leaking and the pedal will not come back, kind of try it and see.

If it turns out the master cylinder is stuffed and no other leak then changing the cylinder is easy and bleeding from the ABS unit will be required, having said that if the car has sat around its worth flushing out anyhow.

Jeff

Thanks. I'm pretty sure the previous owner will have tried simply filling it up etc... It defintely looks rotten like to be honest. I'll give it a go though. I'm just wondering if the brake booster servo goes very often
