as my zed is in gps with latzio he asked me if i wanted to remove the ac compressor as it gives much better low end grunt!!!

so i said yeah!! anyone else tried it and did it make a difference??

i havent had my z back yet so cant comment on it but i will let you know!!

p.s latz said a few fellas have been to gps to ask to have the air con removed!!

by the way you still get the hot and cold air!!

just turn it off!!! the comressor pulley only freewheels then, cant see as removing it is gonna really make that much difference

yeah, i thought they only sucked power when it was switched on.

A far less drastic way to check the effect on low end grunt is to remove the belt. Much easier to reverse than removing the compressor. However, like the others, I wouldn't expect you to notice a difference.

Of course you don't then get the benefit of reduced mass but, as everyone knows, we should never discuss politics, religion or mass.

Hmmm! when I had my S13,I did notice a differance in performance when I had my aircon blowing,I must say I dont notice anything in the Z.

I noticed a hell of an increase in fuel consumption in my Soup if I had the A/C blowing on a long journey.

Use the Econ button on the Z if you wanna stop that scenario.

Clarkey Sharkey is right though mate, summers are a tad warmer and I do love having A/C but saying that get them Targas off instead. Just means you can't hear the sodding CD at more than 50mph! ROFL :D

I couldn't believe how noisy Z's are with wind noise with the tops off! :D

Me got ASP underdrive pulley to go on though at some point! Lightened crank pulley should add a good 10 horses for courses. Will see!

You also need to remember that the Z ecu is so clever that even when aircon is selected it shuts the compressor down for you heavy footed types and keeps it shut down while your welly is on the floor. It comes back into operation when sanity returns and you ease off. Means your max bhp goes into thrust rather than coolness just when you only care about thrust! So leave it be! Maybe if your compressor or condenser is stuffed anyway and all the gas is gone and you decide to save weight by junking it all but not for the drag on the compressor cos that cuts out at full throttle. Good working aircon is worth keeping. Even in winter its great for getting rid of condensation during the pissing rain.

This reminds me of a dumb thought that gone through my mind a few times while tootling around with the roofs off. Like Timmy said, it's bloody noisy for one thing, and judging by the rush of air that comes forwards past your ear, the rear of the car acts as a pretty spectacular air scoop - the aerodynamic drag must be massive.

So it makes me wonder (and yes, I know this is stoopid :D) what if that air had an escape route? What if you pop the bootlid, obviously tie it to the latch so it doesn't go skywards, thus leaving about an inch or so's gap? :)

No more air blowback, surely much reduced drag, and quite possibly a lot less noise to boot (sorry).

I now throw myself on your mercy :D

This would actually increase the effect. The air moving backwards is created by the difference in speed of the air moving over the car and the air inside the car (that difference being the speed you're moving at).

The air coming backwards is actually an area of turbulence between an area of high pressure (above and a bit behind the car) and an area of low pressure inside the car. The air is actually travelling in circles. If you held up a streamer and moved it around you'd see the air all over the place in the car.

If you popped the bootlid higher, you'd create a larger area of low pressure. You MIGHT find that the bit of air that your head is in is not now moving backwards (i.e. the circles of air are in a different place and your head is in a backwards moving bit) but the drag would be greater.

No doubt this thread is about to kick off !

Also what makes a big dofference is how high or low your front or rear end is. The angle of attack gets changed in a big way with a lowered front end

Willie.

I suspect you might get problems with vortices off the tailgate sucking exhaust into the cabin. I also suspect that the aerodynamics are so shot by taking the tops off that opening the tailgate would not have much of an effect.

Re noisy with T tops off - tongue in cheek response to lighten the mood!

If you are a big lad then mind and use the little joystick thingy on the side of the seat to lower the seat so's your head is back inside. I'm a shortarse myself and my head just brushes the T top blinds when fitted so I know the big guys will be right out there in the sliptream when the tops are off! Much quieter inside! I certainly dont notice mine being noisy with the tops off as long as its below 90!

Willie

Stick a big paul bailey spoiler just above the windscreen and deflect the air right over the roof. LOL
