Hi guys. Bit of a mystery here. Fairlady Z TT 1991 J reg.

I've just had my passenger side front wheel bearing replaced and then gearbox oil and coolant changed. Was checking the gearbox oil level when I got it back from the garage and noticed a disconnected black rubber hose, prob just under an inch in diameter, sitting on top of the engine in front of the battery. It has the remains of some black tape around the end, but is clean. No marks on it, no jubilee clip or any other sign of it being attached to anything. Now I don't know what all the bits of my engine are for, but I have spent long enough looking at it over the last 15 years to know that it has never had a disconnected hose sitting on top!!

Took it back round the garage and they've just spent an hour scratching their heads as to what it can be. Got it up on the ramps and the hose is fixed at the other end to something underneath the passenger side front wing. Mechanic says it's not oil, it's not water because the hose is clean. It has no pressure when blown into, either when the engine is running, or when it's not. It's about 3' long. There isn't a similar one on the other side. Was told it's not affecting the running of the engine, but I'm not happy to drive the car until I know what it is.

Neither of the mechanics have any idea what it is for or where it has come from :glare:. They've told me to take it back tomorrow so they can strip off the front wheel splash guard and find out what it's attached to.

Bit of a long shot, but any ideas please?

Hiya guys. Thanks for the suggestions, but it's not that one Groover. It's much longer - about 4' long. We'll try to get to the other end of it and show you that

Is it flexible rubber hose, or plastic pipe? Maybe some one used it as an extension to top the gear box oil up, or for a bot leverage and forgot about it?

It's a flexible rubber hose. I'm wondering too now if it's something the garage has left behind. For obvious reasons I'm not too keen to take it back to them unless I really have to

Hi guys - we still haven't got to the bottom of this but have been having another look today and could use some help again .. pics below

We've chased the "mystery hose". The diameter of the hose, outside to outside is 14/16"

Just to recap, this is hose sticking out after it came back from garage for gearbox oil change

hose3.jpg

From the picture arrow (below), it goes into the engine bay and hose is about 1 metre long and not connected to anything

Cable tied to AIV pipe (passenger side) as shown below

Cable tied throughout inner wing from back to front as below

Comes out below coolant reservoir as below

my_car4.jpg

Comes out behind coolant reservoir and is jubilee clipped to a thinner steel pipe exiting the engine bay inner wing. Does anyone know what this thinner steel pipe is and where it goes?

Any ideas please? What the hell has this useless garage done to my car? It's been off the road for over a month now. Grrrr.

My partner wonders if this is going round the inner wing to keep it away from the heat of the engine - maybe something to do with the intercooler or air intake??

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have :)

That last pic behind the coolent overflow tank is the carbon canister.

you sure that's we're it goes and just doesn't end near there as the pipes are the same size.

as just looked at mine with it being stripped down and I can see the same thick black pipe but

it routes straight into the canister behind the white overflow bottle.

that is a Chassis Vent for the carbon canister ... Normaly when it gets deletes its left open

not sure why someone has put a pipe on it but remove will be ok

well nothing you can do there if he has .. but there are holes in the chassis rail its self when going under the car so all being well it will find its way out

Thanks as always for your fantastic help guys, but as far as I know, nothing has been done to the car from new as I bought it with only 26,000km on the clock and one owner in Tokyo 15 years ago. Wouldn't have thought it had been messed with before then. Is there a link somewhere to a carbon canister delete so I can check that out?

And I'm still wondering why a passenger wheel bearing change and gearbox oil change might have resulted in this bloody hose sticking out of the engine in the first place? It was never there before (or at least not in the same place)

Hi guys - been offline for a while. Still don't have this problem sorted.

Do other people concur with MarkDerby that this is a Chassis Vent for the carbon canister and I should remove it? I'd really like a second opinion since I don't know what I'm looking at.

Or can anyone recommend a mechanic in north-west London area I might be able to email on this? Thanks as always for your help :)

the lads on here are pretty clued up with the zeds bud but if you need a 2nd opinion jeff your man

if it has had a basic carbon canister delete then it could have just been linked to the fuel tank breather, as that comes into the engine bay and you will get the smell off fuel. instead of extending the correct breather pipe to the rear of the car, this was possibly to had and they run the breather into this and to the back of the car. fuel tank breather i believe would have come up the P/S chassis leg

Hi guys

At long last we got to the bottom of the "Mystery Hose". It turns out it was something that had been added at some point by a previous owner to suck fresh air into the carbon canister. Nothing more sinister than that. Anyway, it's been cut down now to a sensible length and all is working well.

Just thought I'd update you and thank you as always for your help and advice :)

Aha, seems likely Jaikai, since I got it directly from Tokyo with only 20,000 km on the clock and nothing changed from original
