Hi All

Having recently been unfortunate to have a broken bolt on tensioner pulley.

Have stripped down and replaced bolt, how do I confirm that the crank is on TDC .

Have read lots of guides http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?135139-Align-timing-belt&highlight=cambelt

Cambelt is back on but as i know the engine was turned over with the belt loose not sure whether crank is on TDC or not?

Is there any simple way of confirming?

Thanks

Colin

i always took out a plug and stuck in a small metal rod into a bore and turned over the engine slowly untill the rod showed me where tdc was ( if the marks on the engine were not visible) im not sure which cylinder it woul be on the zed though.

Cly 1 should be at TDC .. look at your Lower crank gear there is a Dot on it and a notch on the oil pump these should be all most together

all cam Dots should be at the location of where the Dots are on the Cam cover back plate

However these marks are only a guide not precise timing marks

you need to check the timing mark Lines on the belt

Hi

Have all marks on cam lined up and marks on crank pulley lined up.

Not sure whether crank pulley is on compression stroke(TDC) or exhaust stroke.

May try and rig up airline and see if its holds pressure which if i`m correct should be tdc,

just put a plug in really loose and bring the crank around clockwise 1st before fitting belt..you should hear the "hiss"

Hi mate,

U have marks on the belt itself, aslong has there all on the dots on pulleys its fine.

dont worry about bottom pulley.

use the marks on belt with pulleys. The ones on engine aint there if u worry about them your get it wrong.

Yes your over thinking it, as above the crank sprocket dot and notch in oil pump line up and that`s thE crank done, how ever many times you turn it the crank is always correct when the timing mark is aligned.

The cams of course run at half speed and these need to be lines up to and then the belt markings does the rest for you, the correlation between the crank and cams is where the matter of what stroke the engine is at is important.

I had a nightmare doing mine and am now thinking they supplied the wrong belt....

Fitted engine a while ago but not fired up yet.... I am gonna pull the covers and double check everything now....

I had the problem that after rotating the bottom pulley using a ratchet, none of the timing marks would line up again....

I am gonna pull belt and start again to be sure.... Now I am second guessing myself as I did it a year ago.....I was in a hurry to get engine fitted into car as we were moving home the next day and car needed to be low loaded to new house....

I will do it when I pull the plenum and do delete's.....

Better to be safe.....lol

Hi Coju, Just follow instructions and advice.... make sure that marks are in the right place, belt doesn't slip and you will be fine... I used wooden dowel rod to check no1 was at TDC with plug removed.....

If your not sure, double check and then check again....

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!

i think the op has not taken the bottom cover off to reveal the bottom sprocket as he,s just renewed the stud and using the exsisting belt in situ..thats my understanding anyway

you will be there all day waiting for them to line up the same as fitting
