Just got car back from Garage.

Been told the Rocker cover Gasket is leaking badly. Garage was going to charge £650 to repair this. So instead have decided to give it a go myself.

How long do you reckon this will take me, first time at stripping down one of these engines. Any advice or tips appreciated!

Cheers,

Nick

How is it that non specialist garages charge more than specialist ones? seen this so many times, almost like they over charge it on purpose to make it go away but if you say yes they have the bonus of doubling the quote.

Rocker cover gaskets should be max around the £300 to £350 mark, most of it is labour with a few gaskets and fluids so £650 is criminal.

prfffff, the worst two parts are these, getting the connections off without causing damage they are brittle as you like! secondly the water pipes under the plenum, replace your pcvs and doa water bypass while your there that will simply the refit. don't forget the buy the upper plenum gasket, and use a torque wrench to retighten the plenum, this will make sure you sit it flat and not over tighten it and strip the ali lower plenum. Oh and go buy yourself a shit tone of labels.

I think you hit the nail on the head there jeff, they don't want to do it. either that or they are covering themselves for learning time.

Drive it to me sunday in kent im helping oobumblebeoo (anthony) refit his new engine.

I'll help u, will be doing his car but can jump between the 2 cars if u get stuck.

its only gonna cost u the fuel, was in worthing the other day met up with sussex stu.

Massive thanks for offering your services!!!!

This may be a option for me, my only worry is last time i drove it any distance due to the oil leak the engine caught fire.

If i am going to come up what parts will i need and what tools will i require?

Thanks again

Oh not a lot, less than 20 quid think it was 13 maybe, mjp is a great source for all those things, and knows z's inside out so will be able to help you pronto. Don't be tempted to reuse the gasket that would be a bad decision. The pcv's are also available off him for a few quid and the hoses for them I got from sfs as they are much cheaper to go to directly as a .co.uk member rather than buy through say zcentre.

I have tools mate, u wont need to worry about that,

Off the top of my head get rocker cover gaskets, decent sealant oil proof maybe buy from nissan or I know euro car parts sell one for vauxhall sumps etc.

And the upper plenum gasket.

Give me a call on 07450246567 if u need help.

have u got aa/rac get them to recover u, u sure the oil caught it on fire, cant say for sure but have never seen an oil leak catch fire and seen some bad leaks.

Just so you know, only the top covers have a gasket, for some unknown reason nissan decided that the side covers should use a silicone sealant or similar so bear that in mind when getting the right sort of sealant.

there are also two half moon things that sit on the rear of the cam covers, if its been onfire these could have melted.
