I posted at the start of this month i had bought a SWB N/a with a naff engine and was planning on doing a TT swap among other things and general tinkery stuffs.... ( BTW i bought this with a Big end Bearing gone.....)

Well i started to strip her down and upon removing the R/h Wing i found this abomination!

IMG_0635-1.jpg

Then obviously having to remove the engine and planning on stripping the underside i start removing the engine beginning with the Fluids and find a certain something peeping out the sump! (the dipstick i knew about when buying the car and the look on the owners face when i asked him where the rest of it was was priceless)

This next one isnt detrimental but i thought, at least I've gained something so far from buying this.....

Now for my favorite surprise ive had yet...

Now due to the lack of time i am able to spend working on this heap i decided to refit the sub frames to get it rolling to bring it to my Camp to allow me to work on it during the week whilst im not working. In this time i thought id take apart the engine i had removed to see what had REALLY had happened as the rod popping out of the sump just made me oh so curious!

Off comes the sump and looking back at the first pic of the sump the out lay of the damage becomes pretty obvious. ill let the next few pictures do the talking, but just to say one thing....i actually started this and apart from it sounding pretty 'rough' it actually ran and moved, which for what you will see i thought was impressive.

Everyone loves a bit of penetration.

This little devil was sitting in the sump after having a party.

This next pic is off piston 5..(piston 6 is the one that had the 'big end bearing' gone)

Other than huge amounts of filings, the cast framework that sits lower of the crank being destroyed, and all the baffles in the sump being flattened. Oh and the huge breather hole in the sump. Its in pretty good nick, anyone wanna buy?

Ill prob be adding to this over time....

Hope you enjoyed,

Hollings.

Are you going to cut your losses on this mate or are you still planning on getting it straight and back on the road?

Yeah I'm going to plod along, not going to give up yet, but I'm not going to buy the engine or other items until the shell is good.

Keep at it, setbacks make it all the more satisfying when you are looking at the finished project

p.s. I've got the same hammer as you!!!

Alrighty well ive been doing some work on the zed when i can during my weekends.

Mainly the first part was removing everything i could from the underside of the car, Both subframes (and dis-assembly of) fuel take brake/fuel lines and anything else removable with a socket really.

Once i removed everything i was planning on removing all surface finish from the underside of the car as ive noticed that under the factory seam seal there can sometimes lie our little friend rust. I will be then Acid etching and painting with a lovely coat of Rust bullet ( http://www.rustbulletuk.com/ )

Not the cheapest of paints but far superior obviously depending on the prep before hand.

anyway heres some pics.

Subframe removed

When i removed the plastic cover to reveal the fuel filler neck, the amount of dirt behind it was pretty impressive, but even better i found a bunch of nuts! not sure how they got in there. unfortunately they fell out and scattered over the garage floor so no pic :(

Good to see some progress with it mate, nuts as in metal ones? Or as in a squirrel has been living there lol?

During all this the grinding was getting boring so i bounced between jobs,

Here is a pic or 2 of removing stuff

The 'lumpy' engine

Dont mind the paint on the Diff bushes...they're coming out!

For cleaning the G/box and the back of the diff (ali part) i bought some ali clean, and man does that stuff stink along with the metal blast 'acid etcher' i bought. but the ali clean really did get a lot of crap and gunk of the gearbox so the new coat of hammershite can make it look all pretty

Dash removed to allow access to the EFI Harness and the A/C parts behind the dash. also i got to see how much of a Bodge the alarm fitting is. I should get some pics but i was too busy raveling it!

Well after some etching and loads of grinding and looking like a chimney sweeper running out of a smokey garage when the grinder caught a bit of seam sealant, i managed to get a little paint in the rear arches...

Not the finished product yet but its an improvement i think.....hope..

Woohoo update time!

Now 'cause im painting all the underside and trying to make stuff look clean, here is a pile off random underside + misc items which is going to get coated in the powdery stuff... Well more like one pile i have anyway..

D3DEE08B-33E7-4A9B-AC50-0EB9DF14EBB1-362-0000001DB8AE4592.jpg

And again because of the whole shiny thing Ive given my fuel tank a lick of paint..

Now after going into this depth of a build it would be pointless for me to take all the control arms and so on off the subframes to get powder coated...but not replace the bushes. so here is my lovely box of energy suspension

(probably thinking why am i looking at a box..? yeah im just putting pics in now to make my thread big haha)

..said box.
