When I first got my uk 300 manual turbo, (1992) it came with a second ecu.

Is there an easy way for me to check that the one that is fitted is indeed the right one for the car?

Also, can I actually check which one of the two is the original one?

Do you have the numbers that are on both ECUs Dave?

Look for the Nissan part number. Eg 23710- 40P01

I did a little bit of searching some time ago and found out that there was a large number of ecu codes. (not sure if this is any help to you)..

 

the first part of the number seemed to stay the same:

 

23710

 

but the second part varied a lot

- 40P03

- 40P13

- 37P06 - 1992 RHD on the parts catalogue ( but I don't know how that would make a difference)

- 37P16 - 1992 RHD

- 37P01 - 1992 LHD

and more... it looks like any number with the second last digit as a "0" (i.e. 01) is for the manual and if its a "1" (i.e. 11) is for the auto (didn't look into NA and TT)

 

but mine is a TT and the number is

'94 onwards ECU. Probably doesn't have a Nissan 23710 xxPxx designation on the case.

 

All the ECUs I have here with a 23710 xxPxx part number have a JECS part number starting A18-000

 

The only one I have which doesn't have a Nissan part number is A18-A98 MD7.

Noz, as you say, this ECU is 94 on wards, would that be OK for a 1992?

Its the first long number on the black and silver sticker you need. For example, this is 23710-41P03 :

The ECU I have in front of me just has a blank space where yours has the 10 digit number I'm afraid.

I will check the one in the car tomorrow, but I am 95% certain it is the same.

Out of interest, I can see that the codes are different between Auto and Manual but is there functional differences. Can you fit auto to manual for example?

Yes, you can fit an auto ECU to a manual, but not a manual to auto, the auto ECU has features for the auto box, I'm pretty sure the actual gubbins is the same, just the map/software is different, so you could put an auto chip into a manual ECU.

It's just that the one that is fitted does not have the ability to go into diagnostic mode as there is no integral switching assembly, just the red bulb.

Yup, US ECUs with no Nissan part numbers on the case.

 

As an aside, the only difference between Fed & Cali maps are the enabled DTC codes for the EGT sensor, EGR functionality, Injector leak & Injector circuit plus the safety rev limit & fuel cut when stationary.

I have been checking various things with Data Scan of late, and on the connect screen it actually displays the ECU number that you guys have been referring too.:whistling:

The one that was not present on the outer case.

If it is safe to do so, I will interrogate the spare ECU the same way.

Still can not understand why one should have diagnostic mode and the other does not though.

Further to this, I have an ECU that has no identification (23710 xxpxx), this box is blank. The only numbers on it are A18-A34 MA3. It has "OX25" next to it, and is definitely a Japanese Ecu as it states Made in Japan! I think it is for a TT Auto, around 1991, series 1 but I want to make sure. Can anyone help me identify it?

Anyone help? I don't want to put it in if it is not for an auto TT.
