  • We did a video earlier this week, the Z hasn't been out the garage since July 2020. So happy for this, this is miles away from professional video, and the guy who helped me with the drone and editing,

Today nothing, but I did take the Zed out for a little drive the other day - and stopped for a couple of pics. Any excuse 😉

Going through the gears is fine. It feels totally fine but at certain (low) rpms it starts grinding. Admittedly not as much as the last box and I still have all the gears. I gotta see how long I can last it, but im pretty sure I'll still go to the boxhill run.

The fluid I think is ok, it wasn't smelling burnt, excessively hot or have smoke coming out of the dip stick this time.

Is it definitely the box making the noise? Goes away in neutral?

If you dont want to use it for the boxhill-brighton run I could probably pick you up on route.

Yep, definitely the box, gone in neutral.

You're have a long trip coming to pick me up lol. I can make it fine, It runs alright and boy does it still hold power, until it becomes more than an audible problem I'm going to try and enjoy it as much as possible.

When I broke the last box my motto was; If its broken, I better drive it into the ground with a smile on my face rather than lock it away for years.

Sorry to hear the box is having issues Ali.

I'm wondering if there's another problem? Is you prop shaft Bush OK? Can't understand why two boxes would do the same?

There's got to be more to it than the box going.

Does anyone know of anything else that would grind?

Could it be the prop bearing??

On a lighter note, I got to work on my door cards and speaker pods today.. Got the passenger side almost finished.. :lol:_20160904_201232.jpg

I'm thinking that looks nice..

Definitely the gear box.

That's what I was thinking, how could my car destroy two gearboxes. I don't think it's that torquey to break two boxes....

Veilside's been having this precise problem for a while now... think he's mashed about 3 boxes to date... :pinch:

Prop bearing seemed ok, the first box had lost drive, and was jerky before that iirc, no visible damage to the flexplate, no leaks,

You haven't got any piggy back computers, like hks alc etc, that could be causing pressure issues.

Top be fair I haven't checked the ecu whatsoever as long as I've had it.

Just thinking the amount of electronic goodies fitted to your zed it's possible it had an alc fitted, in theory they just keep the pressure up for faster changes ( I think that's what they do) it could be the culprit...

Hi Alic

Check the paperwork you had with it, I seem to remember paperwork for an after market ECU and some other bits as well.

If you post on here exactly what you've got I'm sure someone will have some ideas.

I changed the box on your car before I MOT'ed it, we flushed it refilled it and it ran beautifully.

We did also swap the torque converter, so that wasn't from the old set up either.

So it does sound like something else is going on there.

Gutted for you mate, but keep plugging away and it will all come right in the end.

I don't see how you can kill that many boxes without much mileage.

It is a blitz ecu, no paperwork for an aftermarket box ecu but I'll have a check to see if it's any different. I don't know if it's the ecu or the gearbox ecu which controls pressure, I have got another box ecu but I think it's too late now!

I'm surprised too, even though you plugged in the manual boost controller the wrong way [emoji14] so it's probably over boosting, still don't think that can kill a box.

I reckon I'll get the box swapped on my own and get someone to come help with all the gremlins that come with a manual conversion.

Ali, remember I gave you the ecu for that gearbox.. Maybe switch that over and see if it's your transmission ecu that's killing the boxes?

Hardest part is lifting the box lol,

Seen anything like this in there..?

Haven't checked the ecu yet

Yeah you did, I could try but it might be knackered already.

Gotta be worth a shot? Its only a plug to pull and change, I mean you could just leave it loose on the passenger floor to test it..

If the ecu has a fault on it, it could affect the effectiveness of the box

Ill give it a shot

Turned out I don't have a blitz ECU, but rather an Impul ECU, im pretty sure this car is one of the original IMPUL 932S models,

Are there any other originals in the country we know of?

It worked beautifully for the way up there, I just can't believe that it could run so well and then just spontaneously fail.

I rekon I could probably do most of the box swap myself now, but don't really want to.... I'm guessing the box swap if pretty much the same changing auto to manual just changing the flex plate to a flywheel. Only wouldn't know what to do for wiring but I think I might have to go for it, if I find a suitable manual box + accessories for a reasonable price.

I'm going to live to regret this most likely but if you find a suitable parts collection and maybe if Alex is up for it to il leave the southwest for the day and get the damn thing converted. Between three of us we could have it done in one lengthy day esp if you did some donkey work before hand.

Wow that is generous, better crack out the beers and fire up the barby then haha.

First start however is where am I going to find a manual conversion with all parts if this is to go ahead...

Lee dent might just have one
