  • We did a video earlier this week, the Z hasn't been out the garage since July 2020. So happy for this, this is miles away from professional video, and the guy who helped me with the drone and editing,

Today nothing, but I did take the Zed out for a little drive the other day - and stopped for a couple of pics. Any excuse 😉

Intended to remove my front bumper today and fit my home made light panels but after braving the rain and wind for about 10 minutes, I decided to pack up and stay healthy! Bloomin freezing!

I finally got frustrated enough and want out and stripped the dashboard again to sort a couple of loose bulbs and fit the ones I'd missed before. Got the fuel light sorted out and got the ring around the ignition done in red too.. All lights are red apart from the windscreen wiper switch and hazards..

Fingers crossed for some decent weather Sunday so I can get the bumper off, fit these lights and get a closer look around at the more hidden areas..

Went for a nice drive with the targas off today, its been a really sunny day!

Got outside today to try and get the bumper off. After inspection of the bumper I've realised that getting the bumper off is going to be a nightmare. More to the point, if I did actually manage it, getting it back on again would be absolutely impossible!

The abflug type 4 bumper that's fitted still utilises the same fixing bolts as the original, but unfortunately the access to said bolts is via a 1 inch hole just in front of each intercooler..

Trying to get a ratchet with a 12 inch extension and a universal joint in to the hole and then on to the bolts at a 45 degree angle is nigh on impossible particularly due to the fact that once the ratchet is in place, you can't see anything!

I decided to give up for now and will re attempt it when it's warmer and I can get the dremel out to increase the access hole for access.

Instead, I decided to get the new alcantara interior fitting started. So out came all the tweed panels from the dash and the tranny tunnel and in went the alcantara.. Just the door cards and rear quarter panels to do over the next few days and then it's ready for the leather seats to be fitted

So been a fairly busy day, but a very satisfying one too..

Got too dark for photos but alcantara and tweed don't make a pretty picture anyway.. Lol

Did you take the indicator lights out first to access the wing bolts?

It's not a stock bumper, it's an Abflug type 4.

I don't know what they look like, but I just assumed it used the stock mounts for the indicators.

Wrong to assume then I guess

It is indeed - it's how you manage to get soooooo much stuff wrong on here soooo much of the time! Let that be a lesson! ;) :wack:

Took mine on a little trip to the newly re-opened British Motor Museum......

......Not a bad day out really. Entry (I think) is a bit steep at £14pp - however there's now a new section with timed admission, to see various cars that are not always on display. The old "Leyland" section had some right old shite (think, Princess, Marina, Allegro etc) but also a few interesting Land Rover exhibits. But the Jaguar bit on the ground floor....

......That was worth the trip itself!! Some nice old classics like an SS100; through to the XJ220. Including the prototype as fitted with the (promised) v12.

And then when we returned home, I decided to give the Zed a well earned wash....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Lol, did you actually read my post to the end Alic?

If you have a look at the photo on this post, you'll understand what a type 4 abflug bumper is and why it's such a pain to get on and off.. I'm almost tempted to fit the quick release fittings on the wings, but i hate the way they look..

To explain how difficult it is to access the bolts, the access hole is in the top of the intercooler vents and is about 1 inch in diameter. Theres hardly room for the ratchet to access, but the bolts are at about a 45 degree angle to the access hole.

Getting the nuts off is guess work and to get them back on??? Well I can imagine the chance of cross threading etc is about 99% it'll happen! LolDSC_0077.jpg

Yeah mate, sorry i didn't google what the bumper looks like and assumed it used the same indicators as the stock/99spec/scarab/impul etc.

I see the problem now :D must be difficult yeah

Yea, it's a pig... Nice looking, just a pig to remove and fit..

I'm going to cut a larger access hole and make a plate to fit over it.

Just out of curiosity why does noel disconnect the O2 sensors for when mapping, nissan put the O2 sensors on for a reason surely?

Mapping 101: Disconnect anything that the ECU uses to interfere with your specified fuelling or timing requirements. This means the O2 sensors and the knock sensor, coincidentally 3 sensors (in total) that are woefully unreliable (O2 sensors) or inadequate (knock sensor) on a 25 year old modified (or even standard) 300zx TT.

O2 sensors are simply there to create a stoichiometric (complete) combustion process (14.7:1 AFR, pump fuel). This ratio provides less NOx than leaner mixtures, so it is an environmental consideration at the expense of frugality. Catalytic converters, which we all have fitted, as Nissan intended, are designed to run at stoich, as opposed to leaner mixtures.

I've not heard the "Nissan did xxxxxx for a reason" argument for quite some time!

Their standard map for the Zed is dogshit (proper scientific term). Their lambda fedback system is dogshit. Their exhaust manifold design is dogshit. Their PRVR system is dogshit. Their AIVs are gurgling dogshit. Their coilpack connectors are brittle dogshit. Their injector connectors are corrosion-prone dogshit. Their miles & miles of intake & intercooler pipework is power-sapping dogshit.

The VG30DETT is one of the greatest engines ever created, and it has (or, hopefully had) a dogshit reputation because of all the aforementioned dogshit. The RB didn't suffer such dogshit fate, even the standard R32 GTR maps are a performance-oriented smooth work of art.

Thanks mate :) That was running at 1.2 bar. Think it's around 17psi but would have to check to be certain. Noel did say I MAY have larger injectors in there, but couldn't say for sure. Also my car ran better on boost with the O2 sensors connected. Apparently that's frequently not the case and noel disconnects them, then maps in open loop.

I reckon your car had slightly larger injectors, not 555s, but seemingly larger than stock. Something out of the ordinary there.

The O2 sensors play no part in the fuelling on boost, only in cruise (light load scenarios).

The reason your car was better with lambda feedback enabled (a rare case indeed) was due to the disparity in AFRs between the RHS bank & the LHS bank at low-load. Typically, the RHS bank runs a tad leaner than the LHS bank. Your car was the opposite of this to the point where boost started building and AFRs then tended to the norm (RHS slightly leaner than LHS).

I map a lot of cars in open loop, because 300zx O2 feedback is dogsh.....

Noz, I love your terminology! Lol.. Nearly fell off the chair laughing!! I got to get over to see you sometime soon to get the dogshit cleaned out of my engine bay Lmfao...

Just out of interest mate, what are we looking at price wise for a tune up and remap? I'm running stock set up as far as I'm aware..

Had some shag pile mats land today, anyone have any cleaning tips?

I just used carpet cleaner, how dirty are yours?

The washing machine idea did cross my mind :D

They aren't too dirty but I just wanted to freshen them up really

Put mine in the washing machine on a cold setting, then hung them to dry... They came up like new:)

After messing about with my door mirrors, dark grey, then gloss black, then matt black.....i have gone full circle and returned to silver, silver wheel actually from poundland and then lacquered...........actually a very good match :thumbup1:.

Ill see you Saturday apparently at Lee's, we can talk spin cycles lol

Sounds good! I'm taking my Vectra for the timing belt and oil change so won't be in my Zed. What you going down for?

Yup, washing machine.. I stuck mine inside a pillowcase to save the clunking around, but they came out lovely..
