Hi everyone,

My car has just started to feel a bit odd, I don't know a massive amount about engines but it seems like it might be miss firing a little, on idle it sits at about 500rpm. When pulling away it almost feels like it wants to stall and holds back a bit. Seems to get a bit better when it is run for a while, also a little smokey but that could be down to a little too much redex as it is White smoke.

Has anyone got any ideas what it could be.

Many thanks

James

You should beable to hear if its miss firing, is it more of a hesitation that miss fire?

If its miss firing I'd check your coil packs and connectors first also check spark plugs and go from there

Not too sure if I'm running on all 6 or not. How do I tell? I'm out all day tomorrow but that's very kind mate. I think it's more of a hesitation but I really don't know as I have no idea what mis firing would sound like, it did seem like it's a louder. As you can tell I know next to nothing but really want to learn more so you guys are a great help, thank you. Think I will change the spark plus first see how that goes, any idea which ones to get are good that don't cost a fortune.

Thanks again

James

A car running a cylinder short usually has a rhythmic kick with a drop in engine tone. A zed drives surprisingly well on 5 cylinders as it's still a 2.5l 5 cylinder but if you tried to accelerate it would feel unhappy about it and the revs would climb very sluggishly. If you look listen and feel the engine under the bonnet try to feel the kick. But the proof is by removing the coil packs (or on other engines the HT leads) and if one doesn't make it worse that cylinder isn't working.

Ok thanks mate, what do I need to do if it's only running on 5 cylinders? Is it a big prob?

Too much Redex?

Then it may be a case of simply just cleaning the plugs first as they may be fauled up.

Worth doing considering the price of new ones.

Yer I put half a bottle in with £40 of fuel, came out a little fast! Supposed to be half a bottle for full tank, but that was over a week ago and it only stared miss behaving yesterday, but I guess it would take time to foul up plugs?

Running on 5 won't do it any good but I wouldn't worry too much it's not Gona kill it in a drive. I am no expert but you will be flooding a cylinder if it's not getting a spark. And to a minor extent your putting unbalanced forces through the rotating parts.

Hi Daddyjim,

Might have been mentioned before, this happened to mine the other week, turned out to be a loose coil pack conector, check them as they get brittle with heat and tend to work there way loose, regarding plugs i purchased some iridum ones the other day on ebay from conceptua in brixham, set of 6 for £48 inc delivery probably the most ive spent on plugs to be honest but in the long run well worth it. ;)

biggest cause of hesitation is the plugs anything other then the oem ngks cause no end of problems with these cars just by the way the nissan was made as it was a deal with ngk to provide the plugs aftermarket ones just dont do the job check them first then move on to the coil packs etc like the other guys have suggested

just go through them, systematically pulling off the coil pack lead off, it should drop in rpms and note, if not that ones not working. Obviously you do one at a time, and listen, id try not to drive it until your satisfied its running on 6. These cars are prone to poor connections, from the 20 year old connectors cracking apart too them being corroded with crap. Id advise new plugs anyways if you cant trace when they were last done, yes they are expensive but they will last and na plugs are half the price of tt plugs so its not such a problem.

One of the first things you should do with any zed, is unplug and clean every last damn connection on the engine, and re-crimp the spades for a better fit, do an oil and filter change, and do a flush and fill of the coolant system.

Thanks very much everyone, great help. I will let you know how I get on. Cheers

You want ngk, pfr6b-11 the 11c is for the twin turbo, but you can use the 11c in an na, gthere twice the price though.

It looks like a lot of the connection clips to the coil packs are brittle and just breaking.

One of the first things to suffer from the high temperature mate. Not much you can do to prevent it, the plastic hardens and becomes brittle. How's the diagnosis going?

Not really started it yet mate was just having a quick look before I go out for the day which I could really do without, just wanna get it sorted, think Mother's Day is going on hold tomorrow. Ha ha. Will the connectors be ok without the clips, or is a case of having to find and buy new ones?

Cheers

I would try and get replacements mate to be honest. One of my zeds decided to shake off one of my damaged connectors that didn't have the clip part in the middle of 'burn up' with a Beamer. Bit embarrasing when you have to pull over because the motors running like a dog, lol.

Ask on here and see if anyone has removed them from a breaker.

Hmmm, the TTs run just fine on BCR8ES which are about as far away length-wise as possible from the stock OEM plugs, and 2 grades colder. BKR7E work perfectly as well :)

Ok I have changed all the spark plugs now and it still seems to be miss firing a bit, think it's slightly better than before tho. A garage said it could be the fuel I use at telco because that stuff is crap apparently. I have checked all the connections to the coils and they seem fine.

Has anyone got any other ideas what it could be.

Cheers

Yeah,

check the MAF, PTU, CAS and TPS connectors (and ecu temp sender unit connector)... maker sure all other connectors are secure and have no corrosion.

and make sure all battery connections are good clean and tight.

run diagnostics to see if any codes.

and some light reading... lol..
