Hi guys im buying bits for my engine

Got weisco pistons 88mm.

Gt2560r turbos.

Labree 5bolt down pipes.

Just buying eagle rods, acl bearings etc.

Gotta buy injectors...

What I wanted to know is do I need an uprated intercooler, if I do get one will it make it laggy,

More interested in has little lag has possible. Whats better front mount/side mount i have a brand new 99spec bumper and*don't wanna cut it up lol.

Also had a greedy boost controller and got rid of it, I don't want one lol.

Can I use boost jets similar to how u do it with stock turbos, cause think im right saying if I had 15psi on stock turbos with boost jets same boost on bigger tubs will make more power.

Didn't like boost controller it was to fussy setting it all up and to easy to turn it up.

Like the way it works with boost jets,

What kind of power do u think Id make with 15psi.

Any help appreciated,

Edited by Terry

Lots of ppl said bigger side mount are better ones.

I think its not good idea ;)

I think a test has been done on this as i remember reading it. Lot of people are against FMIC as they dont like the look however a well made and reputable FMIC performed better than SMIC`s on a dyno run. Pretty sure it was the yank guys that done this but i think there is a certain person over here that has proof of this as well. People say alot of stuff because its what they read others saying and take the word for it but majority of the time this is with no first hand experience. Look at the OEM design of where the SMIC`s are located for a start. Windscreen washer reservoir (on LWB), carbon canister and coolant overflow tank all in and about the area that is for the SMIC air flow.

Looking at the basics an air to air charge cooler works on the principal of allowing air to pass through it as unrestricted as possible and exit out the otherside to allow the greatest cooling of the air in the intercooler. Now look at where the SMIC`s locate and what is behind them. Then look at a FMIC set up and what you get.

Its up to you though and im sure there will be plenty of people along stating that SMIC`s are the way to go cos thats what they have.

I have uprated side mounts at my cousins I took them off cause it seemed more laggy, thats what I was worried about.

So I take it stock intercoolers are a no no lol.

Just don't want to cut my nice new bumper...

Thanks for advice...

They do look good, my side mounts are old, so may just get a front mount.

Will I have to cut my bumper cause that is gonna hurt lol..

New 99spec in the box me with a grinder, heavy handed and all that u see the picture of whats coming lol..

im not sure if you will have to cut it. Just depends how wide the front mount is. Having seen the 99 spec bumper though im not sure it really allows the best air flow for a FMIC as the front opening looks quite small to me so you will have to see what you think and what will be best.

You most definately need better coolers, stock ones even on a stage 1 Zed will suffer heat soak on prolonged runs, so YES but what sort is your choice, i personally favour decent side mounts.

Laggy?, if you drove a car which was laggy after fitting new coolers, something else is wrong, the effect should be like driving your Zed in the cold at night, QUICKER!

Boost controller once set doesn't need to be touched and can be left in the glove box, for peace of mind to avoid boost spikes and increases in boost from coldness, you'd be nuts to get rid once you got it.

have a good read about, certainty in the states they will run 500 bhp on stock intercoolers, I think the problem comes when your doing multiple boosts, still it isn't going to hurt is it. It should reduce charge temps and be safer to run more power. I think its probably wise but not fully essential.

Rest assured Terry intake charge temps too high is no good for your engine and WILL sap power.

During a 300zx club rolling road day many years ago, 75% of the Zeds had high intake charge temps, the more efficient your coolers the safer your engine is thats why rolling road tuners watch your intake charge temps when tuning.

Ours are tiny and not the most efficient and anyone who modifies a turbo car and disregards this area is IMO nuts!

There was a thread not long ago where Noz mentioned his favourite was to use a front mount then locate an airfilter in each of the side mount positions. You will need a dual/dummy MAF setup or an aftermarket ECU that reads MAP and intake air temps. Having the airfilters at the side reduces the length of intake pipework as well

From stock intercooler to a cheap eBay FMIC & dual intakes, lag (boost threshold) was reduced noticeably.

The only time I've made a car more "laggy" after modifying the intake was when I went from this:

To this:

It pretty much ruined the drivability of the car, but it was needed to cool the charge at 32+ psi :D

Cheers for all the replies guys.

I'll get some intercoolers, and hope they don't damage bumper to much.

Thanks again everyone
