As you all probably know, my zed has suffered from a few issues in the past that I have either fixed or learn to live with.

Yesterday, I was driving home from work nice and gently. Stopped to buy my lottery tickets, then carried on with my journey.

That's when it started, a knocking noise coming from the engine :(

I thought I would take it to be looked at today, hoping it wasn't to serious.

I have now been told that it was the little ends making all that racket and that I was either going to have to fork out for a rather expensive fix or a new engine.

Not what I needed tho hear!

Obviously I'm not mechanically minded, so question is.....

Is the garage right?

Is this going tho be an expensive fix or replacement engine time?

If it is, then I don't know if its actually worth it, as my clutch bearing is noisy, so that also needs doing and with the cold running issue and the various rust issues that all also need sorting, maybe its time to throw in the towel.

And to make things worse, I didn't win with my lottery ticket!

get a video of it post it up on here ...

but if it is the Big ends on the rods .. Not little end very rear for them to go but more likely to be big end on these engines as quit common as nissan bearings are made of cheese.

depending on the state of damage to the Crank shaft its self ... it could be a Polish and new bearings or New crank and bearings

this can be done with engine in the car but not easy

I'll get a video sorted asap, but either way a garage is going to have to do the work so is this probably going to cost a small fortune?

I had to top it up last week, so I assume so.

It has been a bit smokey recently, I just assumed that it was because it has been so cold recently.

What would explain the oil smelling smoke from the exhausts then :(

Smoke looks fine to me and it does sound like there is something loose :detective:.

Dont run it any more mate...the knocking sounds like its running 50% slower than the crank so its cam/top end. 1st place ide be checking would be a camshaft cap.

Problem is, I know nothing about working on engines. I'd have to pay someone to do it all for me.

I just don't want to start sinking shlt loads more cash into it, if it turns out it is something major.

If there is anyone local who is willing to have a go, I would happily make them as many teas as they want :)

that is Defo the big end knock ... looks/sounds like the engine has Spun a Bearing

Do not Drive the car or run the engine any more ...

its than likely to do more damage to the crank if it hasn't all ready

but there is a High change that it will Split Rod and fook the engine up good and propers

So........

Worth repairing, considering the other issues... Or breaking and putting the money towards a TT?

m8 only you could take that choice ...

if it was me and the car is in good order

2 options

Repair the engine

replace the engine

to the look on your sig pic the car is way to nice to break

do u have room to swap the engine ?

To be fair the car did need a bit of work even before this happened.

There is rusty bits in various places, the thrust bearing is noisy when the clutch isn't down, it still has the cold running issue etc etc.

Also as you mentioned about space, I don't have any! I even have to park on my neighbors driveway.

Another issue, this is my daily driver, fck knows how im guna get to work on Monday.

I have a na engine for sale. Does have a ticky lifter but it's been like that since I bought it 7 years ago, good strong engine, and a direct fit

Thanks for the offer mate. I've had a couple of offers for engines now.

Haven't quite decided on what to do yet, although even before this happened, I've had my eye on a TT for sale.

I'm just guna have a good long think and mull over the options.

Although, the way I'm thinking at the the moment, there may well be a breaking thread coming soon.

Just wandered what you decided to go with in the end bud?? Did you end up putting a TT engine in by any chance?

  • Author

it was a real shame to break it as i did love that zed, i suppose your first is always fondly remembered!

but all good things come to an end, and having the TT helps me forget the heartache :)
