Whilst doing a routine assessment for a new owner last week we came across the wheel and tyre combo below, with a low ride hight and body kit fitted the wheel and tyre that was visable in normal use appeared just fine, in fact the tyre tread was very good.

However whilst underneath the car we could see the inside wall was a very different affair, take a look and imagine the outcome of a long sustained motorway journey with this fitted to your zed, makes me shudder! what though makes me absolutely furious is the 12 months MOT that came with the car from 2 weeks earlier.....used car dealers!! and that was the tip of the problems.

Worth checking the inner walls of your tyres periodically to be sure.

Holy 5hit!!

Lucky that didn't blow on the way to you!!

My old saph used to keep doing that to tyres, was told it was because the suspension was so low and stiff, so the tyres were taking a beating.

Don't know how true that is though.

Although, you can tell when its happened as the car starts to shake and vibrate at ever low speeds.

I had exact same thing happen on my work van, put a nice set of 18s on it.

The tyres looked great after a bit of driving got a vibration,

And every wheel had bulges on the inner walls.

All the tyres looked like new tread. They were fullrun on mine, cheap tyres see a lot of them getting bulges.

Tyre companys shouldn't be allowed to sell cheap tyres some of them are just dangerous.

Damaged steel belt or a breakdown of ply within tyre sidewall. Probably pothole damage.

That's quite shocking! So easy to assume the tyres are good when looked at from the outside wall.

Damaged steel belt or a breakdown of ply within tyre sidewall. Probably pothole damage.

Quite possible, so therefore the tyre damage could have occured after the MoT tester had put it through the MoT. Obviously we're not aware of the other problems with this particular car but it may be the case that the MoT tester was right to pass it at time of testing as the problem hadn't yet occured

Out of interest what other problems were identified that would warrant an MoT fail

I know one thing, i caught a real deep pothole the other day and was surprised the wheel wasn't damaged, think i'll be jacking the car up now and double checking the inside of the tyre, just in case!

Yes the tyre area made by Wanli, however I dont think the the tyre brand make was the issue as budget or branded have to pass a certain level of quality, the car had been stood with four flat tyres for some time on a dealer forecourt and the rest of the tyres have side wall crackes or/and splits on the outer side and this particular one was on the inside.

The other tyre issues are unlikley to have occurred after the MOT two weeks ago, given that also the steering coupling was seized so turning the steering wheel was horrid with parts of the turn been much harder than the rest, a couple of minor bulb issues and a non retracting seat belts just feels like it was a an "easy" MOT. I will say though 99.9% of the time testers will be fair but safe when it comes to older cars so the 0.1% are letting the good guys down.

This exact same thing happened to my Goodyear Eagle F1 on the rear, and they are good tyres. The bulge was soo big it rubbed the petrol filler gaurd! Tyre shop said I must have chrushed the wall on a kerb or something.

Same happened to me o the BMW, didn't bump anything it just failed, didn't even get any vibration?

**update pics**

Inside view of the tyre, the inner wall had completely degraded and the rubber that had shed off is very clear to see.

Moral of the story is check the whole of your tyres not just the outside bit.

What's the manufacture date on the tyre?

It has an 07 manufacture date, not excatly ancient, but the tread amount suggests it has stood around a lot.

Mots are stupid, u can pass a tyre with centre 3/4 with tread long has no cords showing on edge.

But thats not to say u pull out garage and same tyre what mot passed old bill could say its illegal.

Seat belts u pull them out check for fraying etc, but get moaned at by guy doing test for pulling it so it locks.

So belt looks ok but lock might not work.

Lots of bits, 1.6mm minimum tread on car bigger stuff is 1mm whats the sense in that.

Glad I check my own car cause in my opinion most mots aint worth the paper there writen on.

Think the best thing is look yourself, or get it looked at by say zedworld dont just think cause its got an mot its all good cause it probably aint.
