On a trip over to help Voddy yesterday with his wire loom change my Zeds heating was all over the place. It was going hot then cold, steaming up the windscreen and I was getting smoke/vapour out of the vents!

There wasn't a strong smell the the vapour and it was coming and going with the temp changes. I still haven't had time to get my fusebox out and check that for corrosion so is there anything there that might not be working that is screwing with my heaters or could it be the matrix itself?

Almost sure a matrix issue if the screen filled and vapour from the vents

I was thinking that, fluctuating tempretures indacte air locks and fluid re-entering the matrix. could be a pin prick, but it certainly sounds like it was bloody hot. check your fluid levels, and I wouldn't drive it until you've solved it as you will quickly kill your zed without enough fluid/air locks.

Cheers for the replys guys. Is there a way of possible repair or is it a whole unit replace? If so do I get one from MJP?

No.. not that I know of.

Yes.

Not sure (send him a message) .. but you can get a one from a different Nissan model that is cheaper.

do a search...

As above, most defo matrix. The Primera uses an upgraded core matrix that fits the Zed, can't remember what model it is out of though. Sure someone on here will tell you.

Sounds good Vods is it out or do we another day together to really get the locals talking about our blossoming love affair?

Next question.

How hard is the heater bypass to do?

No real point stripping down the dash when it will need doing again a few weeks later for my manual conversion. Not planning on using the Zed much but the MOT will be due before the conversion is done.

You dont need to strip the dash out to do the manual conversion lol, but the by pass is easy, just join the two heater matrix pipes on the rear of the engine, that go through the fire wall, you dont even need to move anything out of the way half the time to get to them.

Have a look down the back of the block, to the right of the master cylinder, they run from here to two uprights that turn through 90 degrees and go into the centre of the back of the block. You will see two 20mm ish diameter hoses, running from the back of the block through the firewall, that's them..... just connect one to the other and your bypassed.

In regards to the manual conversion, getting that damn peddle box in is the hardest part, you may find it easier to pop out the clocks to allow you to push/pull the cables about to move it into place, im sure ian will sort that out in that respect.

I am not doing the conversion myself I have a mate doing it while he replaces my turbos. I was planning on asking him nicely to change the matrix while he was at it.

He must be a good mate...3 of the worst jobs on a zed you have listed there:D

It is far from a freebie but he has a couple of zeds and has done those jobs plenty of times before. So i know she will be in safe hands.

Still not had a chance to do the bypass. How do you join the pipes together or is it a case of just taking both out and just joining one to each end of the engine?

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally got my water pipes off after having a few hissy fits and having to take many breaks to let my open wounds heal.

When I loop in the bypass, how good does the loop need to be for the flow?

I read on some US sites that they just blank them off completely so going by this I don't need a perfect feed just connect them up and be done.
