I am asking this out of interest as I am only contemplating it at the moment.

Its just I'm fed up now of the cold running issue, and today when I started her a large plume of smoke came out the back :(

Its a 90 n/a manual

Its got a full stainless exhaust (which for those who have met me said sounds the nuts)

Jun front bumper

Clear rear lights with 99 spec lines with matching lines running through the reverse lights.

18" azev staggered alloys

Mid level spoiler

Mono steering wheel

Leather interior

Etc

Various new parts

I also have some impul skirts and veilside rear bumper that I haven't got round to painting/fitting yet.

Like I said, I am just asking as haven't made my mind up yet.

Why have I never seen you about before seein as your in colchester?

I have only ever seen another silver zed being driven by a bird around town but even she has disappeared.

I would find out what the problem is first and try and fix it. At least you have no turbo's to worry about.

Problem is mate, I've spent so much cash on garage bills and parts trying to get the current issues sorted (which still haven't been completely solved) that I am finally getting to my breaking point, especially if the big cloud of smoke means another huge garage bill.

There was a time not that long ago where breaking a standard or near standard zed could reward you with a tidy sum, often more than selling as a road worthy zed, but this was mainly due to the absolutely nuts state of the second hand market and glut of poor condition zeds, but the increasing change in perceived values and the state of the countries finances has stripped ( pardon the pun) most if not all cars of most of their value as we know it, keeping your zed alive today has never been more of a challenge both justifing any cash spent as well as partners views on the subject, but then thats why we are are called enthusiasts.

Today the nissan 300zx breaking scene is completely awash with general parts, breaking your own car in a domestic situation ( ie on your drive) is a challenge with the actual breaking, keeping your partner off your back, and don`t forget the neighbours. Parcelling up and shipping parts at the end of a hard days work can become laborious, runs to the post office and buyers chasing up delivery, as I said was worth the hassle for the extra cash but not no more.

Five years ago we had on average 30 zeds at any one time we were breaking, but as the business of breaking changed we had to adapt and reduced to our average now of three zeds at anyone time, so there you have it, an abundant amount of spares out there on ebay, forums and us etc. unless you have lots of aftermarket parts that are worth big money ( are any these days?) the its likely in that breaking a working zed today is less rewarding finacially and time wise than actually selling it as a whole car.

Hope that did not sound like a rant, it is my view based on changing face of breaking zeds for the past 12 + years

I can see your pain mate these cars when they go wrong are so expensive to fix if you dont have the knowledge to do it yourself. Good luck with what ever you decide.

A good insight to the breaking scene from an expert who knows it inside out. Jeff lets hope for better days to come as this recession his hitting hard on all of us.I only hope that when we come to the end of these tough times there will be still a good few 300's left.

I used to use it every day but its been off the road this winter surprising you havnt seen it as its yellow. let me know if you decide to break im up near the genreral hospital i could give you a hand my mate has a engine hoist as well .yer i havnt seen that girl in the silver one lately my mate has seen a chromaflair colour one in colchester alot lately .

hate to sound like a vulture but iff you do decide to break it and i genuinly hope you dont have to but ide be intrested in the impul skirts...

  • Author

I here what your saying Jeff, and if anyone knows what they are talking about, then its you.

I haven't actually decided what I want to do with the old girl yet.

I would love to get it fixed and keep it, but with lack of funds and no local garages that have the knowledge of working with these cars makes it abit of a nightmare.

Also, my zed is my daily driver, so when things go wrong it is even worse as I can't just park it up and slowly work at solving the issues.

I have asked for info on solving the cold running issue before but didn't really get any feedback, the garage I took it to half solved the cold running issue with a new aav but the problem still continues (not as bad, but it is still there).

If I sold the car as is, I would get f*** all for it, probably less than what I've spent on repairs and parts.

Where as if I broke it, I could probably make some of my money back, possibly enough to buy another zed.

If I do decide to start breaking mate, then I'll give you first refusal on the skirts mate.

What do you think its worth.

A... in bits.

B... as a car.

Have you broken one before? Do you "value" your own time ?

Have you got plenty of spare time? Like 40 hours

Have you really read what Jeff is saying. He has been very polite about it.

The real truth is that the average "near stock" car in less than perfect condition is worth next to nothing.

There are LOTS of people breaking cars both as a living(Scrapyards/breakers) plus lots of people doing it as a one off at home both on this forum and elsewhere.

The number of cars is now declining .The values/prices are at rock bottom both as cars and parts.

Nobody can give you definitive figures but either way be prepared for a substantial loss in comparison to what you have paid out. And be prepared to wait a long time to get it all sold.

Thanks for your input Pete.

I'm starting to really think about just keeping it and plodding on with bringing it back to how it should be, both mechanically and cosmetically, just like I had originally planned.

Maybe just buy an old sh1t box to get around in while its being sorted.

I always have and always will love these cars and it would be a shame to tear apart a car that is in pretty solid condition, just because of a few minor issues.

Think I may have to save up my pennies and then take it on the long trip to go see Jeff so a real specialist can shine some light on the issues.

Mate, I know how you feel and I have been following your plight for some time.

I know that what I am about to say is easier said then done but, if you have a passion about your car and want to keep hold of it. If you want it for your pleasure and enjoy driving it when it is working as it should then don't break it. I have been in the same position as you like so many others on this forum. These cars are so well engineered that for the standard DIY mechanic there is only a hand full of jobs you can do unles you have full system knowledge.

Fortunatley this forum and the people who use it will try their damnest to help you out with information and experience that they have gained through ownership but still will stuggle diagnose your issue without having a good old look at the car.

IMHO and experience you cant take these cars to main stream garages as they just have not got the system knowledge on these cars and you will just continue to throw money at them.

If the car means more to you than just transport, you need to get it to someone with that specialist knowledge. You know who will look after you and yes I know birmingham is a long way from your 'neck of the woods'.

I really hope that you are able to stick with it. Too many are getting broke for peanuts but I do understand that it always comes down to money. Good luck matey.

Thanks for your words of advice mate. Although I have come to my decision.....

I'm guna keep at it :)

I think I'm going to have to save up my loose change until I can afford a visit to our not so local (to me anyway) expert, Jeff.

I will in the mean time, keep replacing parts of the fuel system, for example... Fuel pump ecu, feel pump etc etc in the hope the issue will be solved.

I love my car too much to tear it apart even if it does keep p155in me off sometimes.

Good decision on keeping it bud and quite frankly get it taken to someone who knows what they're doing for gods sake man, pay just the once not twice .
