Hi guys,

My Z has been smelling a bit funny after driving recently. Today after driving there was a lot of smoke coming off the outside of the exhaust. Returning to the car 30 minutes later there is a puddle of oil under the car in the same place :(

So I'm guessing I have an oil leak from the gearbox(oil is clean and quite far back to be engine) but wondering if there are any know weak points in that area? The leak appears to be in the centre of the car. Slightly forward of the middle box (or cats?).

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks,

Jynx

that sounds like the rear gear oil seal is failing if its in the center of the car

or if u have a Auto there are 2 oil cooling pipes its poss from there

any of those points will spray on to exhaust and give off a bad smell

Sorry did mean to say TT manual import.

Yeah a seal at the back of the box was my gut feeling. How difficult is that replace?

Quit Easy if it is that ... but u gonna have to take the first section of the prop off ..

u may have to take one or both of the exhaust center pipes off too depending on Stock or after market

u can then just get a flat plate driver and pull it out and then replace it with new ..

but u will need to tap it back in and make sure it goes in Center ...

Thanks for the replies Mark.

Just been looking for a good guide for removing the prop shaft but haven't found one yet, will check the technical manual I have in a bit. I guess the first thing to do tomorrow in the light is to jack the car and try to trace the leak to confirm it is that.

Is this the right part - http://www.importpartspro.com/3213601g10.html ? I'll have to phone my dealer to see if I can source them locally, save waiting for them.

The actual drip is coming off the front of the cats, which when you line it up is almost in line with the gear lever. Look at some pictures of the gearbox that is right at the back so suggests it is that seal.

it will be a standard size seal i would of thought and if your taking it to a garage they should have them on shelf if not get it from local bearing/transmission shop

Prob cost u around £100 for the to do it ..

or when the weather gets better u could do it your self really its not hard

Drop Exhaust off

Take off Heat shield ( if you have one )

undo the 6 bolts at the center of the prop shaft

undo the 2 bolts holding the center bearing

slide out the prop shaft .. u will not see the oil seal

replace and put it all back

THe seals are an odd size, payen make one which is a different depth, iirc stock is 11mm deep and the payen item 10mm.Will work fine still it just means the lip will run in a different position on the crank.

Cheers for the advice guys.

Seal ordered (32136-01G10) £9 from local Nissan main dealer.

3 quarts of Redline MT-90 ordered (check me being all American)

Just got to hope for good weather at the weekend now!

So I started this yesterday and it's been a complete bitch! I guess where it's my first bit of serious work on my Z I'm learning a lot as I'm going.

I've managed to replace the oil seal, but can't move either the fill or drain plug for the gearbox. I have had a 2 foot breaker bar on both and they aren't moving. I read that you can fill/drain through the top of the box under the gearstick. Has anyone done this before?

Also how far in should the oil seal sit in the gearbox? My old seal came out on the prop shaft so I can't compare the before and after. I have got the face of the new seal sunk about 1-2mm into the gearbox, does this sound about right?

Thanks,

they should go with a 2ft bar mate:confused1:...try putting another foot on the end and it WILL go then but remember always take out the filler plug 1st incase something happens on the top one and you cant then put the oil back in once drained;)

Do you want me to send my young brother around to undo them?

not to be a knob but you are trying to turn it the right way?

Heh, yeah I had the same thought - checked about 10 times! :)

The drain plug has been chewed by previous owner so have to be a little careful with it.

Plan at the moment is to try to get the fill plug out and then suck the old oil out. Might have to get it on ramps though to give me enough room to get the leverage on it.

All the yank forums recommend Blaster PB (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aersol-Can-of-Blaster-PB-Penetrating-Catalyst-/350694340318?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item51a702f6de) but I'm sure about spending that much to get what might be snake oil. WD40 hasn't helped at all really.

Anyone rate any UK bolt breakers?

that's because people use the end of their rachet to try and do it instead of buying the correct sized sump plug bit. Halfords do a little set of them for cheapish, may be easier with the right tool.

I thought the plugs where 1/2 inch by design? Are they actually better suited a 13mm square drive or something? Or do you just mean because the corners are normally rounded on ratchets?

13mm is 1/2" ...and yes they are square drive and should fit a cracker bar without any problems
