Need another runabout. The Lancer is fab, cannot fault it but its our only car and its difficult when we're both on placement and need to get to places when we're sharing. Am thinking of going to have a look at this later:

http://www.tradecarsnortheast.co.uk/used-cars/volkswagen-golf-1-6-se-2dr-thornaby-201301497338090

I test drove a Golf last year and liked it, it felt pretty solid and safe, but I've never owned German before.

Anything I ought to know?

I said to Marc before Christmas that I wanted a cabby for my 40th lol

whats your budget? You can pick up a Renault Laguna for next to nothing...

for £1000 about 8 months ago, I ot a 2003 Laguna, 1.9 Diesel, metallic silver, leather seats, 17" alloys, electric all sorts of stuff, 80k miles, full service history, 6 months tax and MOT, recent timing belt, new front discs and pads and new rear shocks...

Got it off a retired couple off ebay, plenty of cheap ones going around on Autotrader etc. Worth having a look at

Up to a grand. But I don't do French, it's against my religion. Had several Citroen & Renault in the past & they've all had electrical problems so I'd never go there again. And Ian (Vodkashots) had a Laguna which was a nightmare so I'll avoid those thanks!

How about this, a mazda 323f BA, i had one for 7 years and ran like a dream, cheap to run as a 1.5, cheap road tax, plenty of room, still look sporty and you can pick them up for peanuts. I bought one last year for the step daughter for £440 and i bought another as a spare for £60.

Parts are cheap and readily available and to be honest for a cheap second car, you cant go wrong really and its Jap

Would love one Groover they're great cars. My old MX-3 was a good car & is still running despite my neighbour writing it off & buying it back & repairing it!

Lol Steams!! Jap or the only euro I'd consider would be German. Might go see the Golf tomorrow

Golfs are actually really good reliable cars I've had a few vr6, they don't rust a great deal, the only common problem are c.v joints,

Can't really go wrong with one

Cheers, hoping to test drive it tomorrow, if I can get over there. No car, d'oh!

Noooooo - not again Jane!!!

You have, let's say, a jaded history with reasonably priced second hand cars......:tt2:

Good luck in what ever you decide on though; I believe that Golfs are normally solid, reliable cars. So (please) just be careful not to buy the only one that isn't.....!!

Richard:oops:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

i think u'd struggle 2get a low miles decent golf for under a grand, lagunas a good possibility i had a mk1 laguna which was as solid as a tank but when i stuck to renault and got a 1.9dci megane everything went wrong with it (including clutch, electrics) and they are only built outer the exact same parts.

Lovely cars those! Way too far for me to travel tho, I'm at Uni full time then on placement until Easter, with 4 4000 word assignments to do, I'll be lucky to get the 6 miles to see the Golf lol! Shame as I had a Celica before and it was a great car.

Off to see the Golf later on, only for a quick look. If its got potential I'll see if I can find anyone locally to look over it for me, I am not parting with any cash this time til I've had someone look at it. Whatever I buy HAS to be reliable, I've got almost 20 weeks on placement this year, I HAVE to be able to get there!

Went to test drive the car. Mechanically it seemed pretty good. No knocks or squeals, drove straight, engine bay ok, has been looked after BUT. The power roof doesn't work! No mention of it in the advert which is a bit of a pisser!! So it's a no go. Back to the drawing board. And eBay lol

Be carefull with ebay..you,ve not had the most luck in your past cars;)

If you want a reliable car that is cheap you will not get any better than a K11 Nissan Micra. Yes many of you may mock it but these cars are literally amazing... I had one for a year and it was great and the 1.0 is very economical. There is nothing German you can buy that will outlast a K11. We took one in last year that had 330,000 miles on the clock (hard miles as the guy was a self employed courier). Need I tell you that the car is still currently being driven around by our Bulgarian valeters!

They are great little cars, we've had two of em! But it means its only me who will drive it as Marc at 6'4" has to practically fold himself in half to get in em lol!

They are good and plentiful tho, loads around. Also, I have to say I am not a fan of driving small cars, a Golf is about as small as I would want to go. Our Lancer is a great size, I feel much safer in sommat bigger.

Will just keep looking. What I really want is another Lexus, wish we'd never sold the GS, it was brill. Downside running cost tho :pinch:

Cheers for replying

What about a P10 Primera then? Just as reliable as the Micra. Plus the one I had got flooded the same time as my Zed but it started and drove... unlike the Z

EDIT: and this one is looking lovely http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nissan-Primera-2-0-SRi-/150897421116?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item23222feb3c

Thats tidy! What are the Almeras like? they're cheap as chips even with low mileage. Such a boreathon tho lol!

Ugh, this is the no-fun car buying I hate! And I'm crap at it ha

I would usually agree but my Zed and my Lexus were both expensive when new cars and cheap second hand and they were awesome! Not looking for exciting yet its just dreary looking for another boring car lol!

The Lancer is a great daily driver but we can't afford a second car on finance so a medium sized to big reliable second car is on the list - but it HAS to be Jap, or at a push, German. ITs so time consuming! Trying to write an assignment and surf for cars, lol
