I know we get another insurance thread every other week but.....

I have just been turned down by both Swinton and Footman James because of the mods on my zed. I only have basic stuff air filter, wheels, exhaust, coilovers , strut braces and a bit of a body kit.

I know there are a good few of you who are covered by Footman and have a lot more mods and much bigger power

Has anyone else been having a problem or am I just unlucky?

Sure when talking to Dave at FJ before he said that its only really boost controllers that scare them off...but he also said that you only declare the mods that you would expect them to pay out on in the event of an accident, if you were happy to source a second hand aftermarket bumper rather than put a new standard one on then there would be no need to declare the bodykit for instance...

That's what I thought as well but when I queried it over the phone I was told that the underwriters have been clamping down a lot over the last 6 - 12 months on mods.

Sky insurance are really good

When i've called around for quotes I got alot of knockbacks but Sky Insurance weren't bothered by anything. Now insure my daily driver with them as they do a multicar policy

It's your own silly fault for declaring the DRL's and I use that in the broadest sense :tt2: as replacement like for like headlights will run into thousands, best not to mention bud :crying:.

Mines with Admiral under multicar and I've declared my mods and there fine.

admiral were quite happy to insure mine with any mods, however they then pointed out the small print, that in the event of a claim only standard parts would be used in the repair, even where replacing declared mods.

so if you damage one side of your car you could end up with 2 stock 16" wheels and 2 aftermarket 18" and stock shocks on one side and aftermarket lowered adjustable on the other

not sure how this would work where one mod relied on another to work and only one part got damaged and replaced with stock

decided it was bolox and didnt use them

Got to ask this as from the sounds of things if you're not worried aftermarket parts being replaced like for like then you don't need to declare them from what Dave@FJ said but I thought insurance companies would do anything they could not to pay out in the event of a claim so having a load of undeclared mods on the car would make that pretty easy for them. What's the deal?

Sounds about right a friend of mines brother wrote off his Skyline recently and hadn't declared the air filter and got no payout

admiral wanted £1500 to cover the zed and my 1.1 clio

I'm with admiral multicar. It works out expensive because they said it takes 12 or 15 years ( can't remember which ) to get their full ncd so unless you've been claim free for ages, they hammer you on your 2nd car. My mx5 cost nearly as much as the z. And it costs £25ish for a windscreen chip. But they are fine with mods.

When i informed them that i had changed all my parts to aftermarket driftworks they asked why !

I told them truthfuly some parts needed changed like the rear lower arms as the joint would fail the next mot

and that the after market part was actualy cheaper than the oem part from nissan and they said they were fine.

Although saying that those parts were cheaper but i doubt standard suspension would be more expensive than my meisters.

My wording is perhaps misleading, rather the value you put on the modifications rather than declaring them in the first place - see post 24 http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?160169-omg-surely-theres-been-a-mistake-%29&p=1628153&viewfull=1#post1628153

Was there another driver involved?

So I work in insurance (underwriting and now customer relations) and I'd tell you all your very silly if you don't declare all mod's, especially performance enhancing (this includes suspension, brakes etc as well as air filters, turbos and all that) and those that change the look in any way. If FJ are saying they don't need you to disclose some things I would recommend you make sure you call them and tell them so that you have the come back if there's a problem. That way it is the businesses choice not to take note or take in to account any mods.

Usually, if a company would have covered a car if the mods were disclosed they will offer to rectify the policy (charge you more and put any terms on the policy that would have been there had they been aware of all the info). If they wouldn't have covered it then the policy will probably be declared void for non disclosure or mis-representation of the material facts.

When I was talking to fj in the past they pretty much told me the wheels/body kit had to be within a percentage threshold of the cars value.

If FJ are saying they don't need you to disclose some things I would recommend .....

That was just a misunderstanding after my loose wording, I then tracked down the thread I had in my head and linked to it above - to be clear FJ never said dont declare, all Dave suggested was that you wouldn't be doing yourself any favours if you valued your bodykit (as an example) highly expecting a big pay day if there was an accident. If you were realistic in your valuation and plan to replace via second hand parts then why inflate your premium or rusk getting a knock back but valuing mods highly.

Apologies to FJ for the wording i initially used.

Guys, the above is definitely misquoting. I certainly wouldn't suggest that you don't declare any modifications, however small.

It is often the value of the modifications that put insurers off providing cover. If you're trying to obtain cover for a car valued at £4k with £3k worth of wheels and bodykit then they don't tend to like it much.

Please do ensure that you do declare any modifications

Hi Dave,

I'm still happily with FJ for insurance but not at the right agreed value.

How do I do this?

Could you please review my thread here: http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?175078-Gauging-Interest-for-valuation

And see what you would value it at please and try and help me with the process.

I'd be happy to pay you for your help.

Thank you for your time,

Ant

i dont understand all this nonsence. right u ring up ur insurance company right and the only thing that your bothered about is its insured at the cheapest quote right. right so you say yes and yes and no and no and yes and get the policy home and u have your car insured for a couple hundred quid and your fully insured great. then you get home read your insurance paperwork that norm follows a few days later right. Erm no. do you think to add things that may or maynot be listed erm no. look. Once you have your quote, and your insured, any modifacation that that are not clearly listed in your paperwork are more likely not included in your quote. everything that is a not standerd fittment on your car should be listed on a list. aftermarket kit, different than norm paint even, ebc if that helps. aftermarket exhaust is what it is the same as the seat that you sit in , if you or somone other than the manifacture put there then list it. then the insurance company will see you have stuff and make anjustment when doing the quote. if you do it online because the web and there system was mass built for them and the masses then wait and get a quote from a norm spealing person on the other end of the phone.. Insurnce companys have a moral finacial comitment to get it right. i said whilst on the phone to mine that they happenrd to spell my name wrong from allen to Alan and few days later had the whole policy re write with the correct spelling. after all its an agreement and involves money and your pride and joy, get it right. the fact that you later add an after market exhaust or somthing else will not in most cases if you done everthing correct, not cost you anymore in premiums.if its there in black and white you and them have done there job if its not then question why. also if you have a fully credited history backed up with documented garenteed workmenship when you have stuff fitted like acredeted bodyshops and other workshops this also helps. a garenteed work cert for your cambelt replacement ect with backup photo also helps. keep it clear and to the facts. hope this helps anyone.

Mines with Admiral under multicar and I've declared my mods and there fine.

Ditto - this year that is!

I always used Lynbrooks, Carol Nash or Lancaster; but as I have my DD and Julia's car on an Admiral Multicar policy, adding the ZX this year knocked £££s off cover for the 2 main vehicles and they were happy with the (albeit minor) modifications I have done to the Z!
