Hi guys,

After my flooding incident how can I tell what condition my engine is in? Need to know if it's ingested water and what should I check/clean to try and get it running

Cheers all

Bit of an update!

Found the upper plenum was full of water so that's off and been drained, can't see the condition of the lower plenum though, my gut feeling is its got water in it! The MAF and filter is off drying out and I'm about to remove and drain the intercoolers as the drivers side pipes are full to the brim with water.

I'm hoping once that's all done I can put it back together and try to start it, wish me luck haha.

If anyone's near Yeovil and can lend a hand I can keep you toppers with tea and pizza haha.

Id whip the plugs out & turn it over by hand to see if any water has made it into the cylinders

surely if the upper and lower plenam are full of water id say there is every chance water has got into the cylinders you could try removing all the spark plugs and slowley hand cranking the engine over, if water starts comming out of the spark plug holes youll know theres water in the cylinders, if there is im no expert but you could tape a hose to a wet and dry vac and try and suck all the water out with that?? As i say no expert just my 2 cents

Was it running or have u tried starting it, if u have and there's water in the cylinders.

May need new engine mate, hope not....

It's not started since it came out the water, the plugs are out the engine already.

Ill check the dipstick in a bit, the PCV hoses are full of mayo!

get the batt charged & plugs out and all pipe work clean and free from water crank the engine over for a goof few mins

its quite hard for the water to enter the sump where the oil is so oil should be ok but just check

once all the water as stopped coming out the holes where the plugs go refit and go for a start

water in a petrol engine isnt to bad and shouldnt do any more damage

Cheers Mark, can I crank it by hand first, if so is it just a case of turning the main crank pulley?

you can do but it will not get the water out as it needs to be turning fast for it to push the water out he holes

u may be lucky and not that much comes out as with the engine Off there be a chance that only one or 2 of the valves be open on the engine to allow water to enter the cylinders

the sooner you get it started the better...water in an engine is very forgiving if it was not running at the time and once all the intake is dried out you should have no ill effects. After its run for 10 mins ide change the oil and filter if it was mine.

just a thought.. an engine is not all you need.. fuel is one thing. I know the tank should be sealed well but thats doesnt mean it still is in an old car that's had a few owners. its a fifteen min job but I would check the petrol tank and remove a sample via the pump access. ( dip a tube/hose pipe in, to the bottom and put ya thumb over the end before withdrawing it. put that sample into a clear bottle and let it settle)

sorry, I know little of your woes.. hope that is relevant.
