great pic, but I doubt the plane is heading for the moon, they arent that sophisticated yet. Hence I doubt it has been there either, so it wont be heading away from the moon. Does that answer your question? ;)

also if it was heading towards wouldnt you see the internal lighting from the windows on the right side, that angle would hide the lighting from view if it was heading away

I thought towards you until I looked at the heat distortion from the engines and it doesn't look like it has effected the tail like the edge of the moon, so think this is overhead with the plane going away from you.

this pic was taken above the aircraft and its flying towards the moon from left to right

Disagree,

The perspective of the rear tail isn't right as the rear left side is longer and that appear that way if the other side is hidden behind the fusalage and the wings front side lights can be seen !

if you look close the light on the port side is on the leading edge of the wing and the other light is on top mid-section

After studing the picture for aeons (well 30 seconds) I can categorically say it is neither flying to or from the moon. Look at all the evidence the perspective, the lights and the wake from the engines its clear the plane is travelling underneath the moon heading for Earth, obviously its on its way back from Mars.

The wingtip lights will be nav lights, the inboard lights are landing lights. Gaz mentioned earlier that he thinks the light is green. If he's right then it's a dead giveaway as the right wing (looking from the rear, facing forward) nav light is green and the left wing, is red. Not sure I can see the green myself.
