Removing . . . . . . . . the cats !!

Evening,

With all this talk of removing cats, I was wondering if I would receive any added performance with my normally aspirated Fairlady. It's a K 92 - is that just out of the age bracket for doing it legally?

Cheers,

John

there has been a lot of discussion about this on the US site.

The general consensus is that it will hurt the performance of your car, because you lose your backpressure.

The turbos themselves provide the backpressure in turbo models.

It's probably out of the legal age bracket as far as removeing them, but we have also spoken about the pre-91 legal thing too.

At the end of the day, if you remove them you could fail your MOT, but from what I've heard from the US site, most cars pass the US emission tests after taken them off.

Check the US site to see what gains there could be. What other mods do you have?

oops, sorry, forgot about the legal age part :)

The emissions becomes stricter on vehicles registered 01/01/93 onwards UNLESS the vehicle was specifically built and sold earlier to comply with the later regulations.

This is a big grey area for cars registered between 01/08/92 and 31/21/92.

Even though it is possible (but difficult) to pass the emissions test without your cats on later cars (hint: rev the car higher as it's more fuel efficient) it is in fact illegal to modify the exhaust on ANY age car in such a way that it will change the emissions figures from those published by the manufacturer.

phew... long sentence :)

But, this regulation is very rarely (if ever) enforced.
