Hey Guys,

Just wanted to get some questions out of the way. If i bought a standard 300zx, what would be the best mods to get more bhp out of the car. Also whats the limit with everything being standard, or what parts would i need to upgrade i would love to get around 380-400 bhp. My main importance would be to 0-60 times being as low as possible.

Cheers

Basic stage 1 modifications + a boost increase should see a HEALTHY standard TT up to around 340bhp mark. By stage 1 I'm meaning, exhaust, decat, airfilter and remapped ecu chip to provide the correct fueling for increased boost to 14psi or so. By that time though the stock clutch will be on the edge, assuming its worn in the first place.

If you want to chase more power than that you need to go down the route of larger injectors, better intercoolers perhaps a bigger radiator. By the 360/370bhp mark (really the absolute max the stock turbos in A+ condition can manage) your looking at replacing the turbos with larger/hybrid units etc along with the downpipes.

By that time your stock pistons and rods having done 15-22 years service will be about ready to break so its time for a full engine rebuild.... Really unless your commited, no point in going past the 340bhp mark from the stage1 mods

0-60 isnt really what the 300zx is all about, although a quick car being fairly powerful, rear wheel drive and no traction control means that its not an easy car to launch, also more likely to do damage to its self. The way these cars get from 40-100mph though is something to behold.

Bear in mind, that if you have shit tyres on a car like this your 0-60 will take an age no matter how much power you have, it also depends on how quick your feet are as well.

so using the right tyres and maybe installing launch controls such as race logic would not help in the matter?

Thanks a lot for that detailed instruction guide!

Thats exactly what I am saying, having good tyres will do more for your 0-60 time than huge amounts of power.

Installing race logic is an option, probably a bit unrequired as rather than improving traction it will just take away the power you have.

A quaffe diff and or leader gears will help more than a power boost aswel won't it? You,ll lose a bit of top end speed but its doubtful you'll ever get near that on the roads. Like has been said, getting these things off the line is an art, I have yet to master. So anything that helps with that is favorite.

You got the right car? 0-60 being your thing? Imagine an impreza or an evo would do it far better.

I chased this with my 1st Z. Not an easy 1.

Cheers.

Having the right tyre and power would be even better i guess, also heard race logik lets you not take the car off boost while changing gear etc.

Well z is the only one i can really get insured on under classic insureance, an impreza is just to expensive for me to able to use insurance wise! :P

I was also under the imprestion that with some basic mods you could get sub 5 seconds on the 300zx

Impression*

If it works and is a genuine 360bhp then yes it would.

but why you want 0-60? Seriously, full blown 0-60's will destroy tyres and clutches and drink fuel.

30-100 is far more impressive. I mean where can you pull out of a junction or roundabout, performing a flat out 0-60 safely in the real world?

I can floor my Zed at 30mph (which is an auto) and it actually hammers the MK2 Focus RS from there to 100mph. All I have is an Exhaust :P

well in London is it not all about 0-60, were can you go over 100? I am not sure if its bad but love the rush i get from stand still to 60+, just love the feeling of being held back in your seat. I am really quite torn between the zx and scubby. At one point decided to go for a zx but now hearing members opinions am i looking at the right car! got me thinking again!

So what about a 30-100 would a zed beat something like the scubby!?

I never liked the Scooby (except 22b and P1)

Its 4wd, so is better in the wet, and has better traction / launch.

once your at 30mph, the Scooby wont touch the Z imo. Neither will the GTO TT, RX7 or Supra TT. (Proven)

i know a lot of scoobies with blown engines, they get hammered, all of them. You want adrenaline, get a Z, it is a real rush when you put your foot down. I dont do it much, still restricted to 110, but it is insanely fast. Partners uncle has an F430 Scuderia, DB9, EVO X and 600bhp MK2 Escort. But none (other than the MK2 Escort) give me the same rush as the Z. Its just brutal.

I have owned 2 Mitsi GTOs, 3 MR2 Tubbies, a modded S14 200sx amoung others, and none give the fear the Z does with your foot down. Its great. I love it. Best to go out in one thats working properly so you know what to expect :D

* Edit: My friend Scott works for prodrive, and has a 1999 740bhp Scooby. It is quick beyond belief, Fastest thing I have been in, 4 under car braces, £6k's worth of coilovers, and immense handling (hit 80mph on a roundabout with me in the car) Scared the ***t out of me with it. But you got to have deep pockets if thats what you want

Also weight isnt on the zed's side. Like everyones said, the zeds forte is rolling speed acceleration. Im running 295's on the back of my zed, and even with stock tubs running 339 at the fly on stock boost, i could light up the back end in first easy peasey

If you want something that will launch you from 0-60 the quickest, a 4wd performance car will ALWAYS be quicker that a RWD, launch control or otherwise.

R32 GTR?

hmm bloody hell, why is the choice always so freaking hard.! Thanks a lot for the input but hmm so after 30 you reckon z would leave a scubby?

I did mate yes, but I wont put my name down just yet, im spending alot of time working at the Olympics so I wont know what days off I going to have until about 3 days before. If i'm about, ill come along!

Yes. Without a shadow of a doubt (state of tune depending, obv i dont have to say a 600hp scoob may destroy a stock zed0. Its all about the Torque!

The Z is a true Sports car, the Impreza is a glorified family Saloon. Thats just my opinion.

i do miss my subaru :) but i wouldn`t swap my z for any car :)

The Z is the best Rush I have ever had. But you got to make sure its one thats running 100% as even when they aint running properly, its still pretty quick, just not as quick as it should be lol.
