At the MOT station the mechanic suggested I should invest in some new pads. Got the pads and removed the old ones but I cannot get the new ones in as one piston is jammed solid !! I have tried everything I can think of but it's not moving !

If I can get the caliper off the car can anyone suggest how I could extract the piston ?

I would then rebuild the caliper using a rebuild kit on both calipers.

Thanks for any tips.

ps the brake line nuts are also absolutely SOLID and attempts to undo them are simply rounding off the edges of the nut :-( I've liberally applied WD40 !

Cheers

Mark

to get the pistons out you can get a compressor and some wood place the wood between the pistons the place the compressor nozzle into the hole where your brake hose attaches too

if one comes out before the others then get somemore wood and jam it in theyr to stop it coming out any further..

hope that helps

sorry just read that properly

youll really need to get the hose fittings out..try some fast freeze spray..cant remember the proper name of it but its made by wurth

Cheers for the tips :-)

At least once its done I'll have peace of mind on the braking front.

that would work but idealy you want to minimise any sort of clamping on the piston due to increasing the chances of damage if you dont know what your doing

airs the best and safest way to go if the pistons realy stuck in theyr

My opinion, for what it's worth mate, is that you might get the piston free - even perform a minor rebuild - only to have the other side go in a few months.

With the age of these cars now, caliper seizure is going to be a common issue and it is a major cause of the dreaded "300zx poor brakes" syndrome. If you don't want to go the full hog of a big (expensive) brake conversion, then I can recommend a set of fully refurbed front calipers. I bought a set from http://www.brakesint.co.uk for about £300 including VAT - then I got a refund of about £50 when I sent the old ones back (so Approx £250 all in) and the car brakes like a new car now. Dead responsive, good pedal feel and above all, it stops safely!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Once the brake pipe starts to round you can spray the bee jesus out of it and it aint budging, its mole grip time im afraid mate.To get a new pipe made wont cost much.

The best stuff I have ever seen for freeing off anything rusted or seized is a penetrating spray called Deblock, its used primarily free freeing seized diesel fuel injectors but works miracles. Its not cheap at around £9 a can but cant recommend it enough.Would work a treat on your seized brakeline :)

Thanks for all the advice guys ! Richard I think the refurb'd brakes will probably be the way to go.

unless really seized you can usually pump the pistons out using the brake pedal until they pop out - it may take a bit of pushing back & forth to get them moving & pull the dust covers back & use some WD40 as you go - make sure the free pistons do not come out first!!

with a seized union on the pipe it is best to cut the pipe & get a socket on there - a decent 6 point socket will get much more purchase on the union without rounding it. Some freeze spray lubricant may also help. Then make up a new pipe to replace

HTH :)

As Richard says, well worth going the whole hog, you wont regret it.

I had several pistons seized and when I stripped them down the others were not that far away!

The difference I found when braking was remarkable, and I haven't beaded the new pads in yet.
