I`ve been offered and small build project ( a summer house) from some clients I built an extension for last year. they are a very reputable landscape garden specialists and their work is excellent!!!

 

my dilemma is, they want a summer house making for RHS Tatton park flower show which is in the next few weeks, BUT they have asked would we do it for free!!!! if they provide the materials!! i reckon we could, in 2 days, build something quite substantial , but for free????

 

We can advertise on the stand and probably get free entrance for the show, and then probably get some nice plants flowers even the summerhouse after the event!!!

 

What would you lot do??

If you get the summerhouse at the end of then yeah probably, assuming you can either sell the summerhouse to cover the cost of the labour or you actually would like a summerhouse. If you look at it that way then really someone is giving you the materials to build a summerhouse for your garden :)

 

If you cant keep the summerhouse then no, two days labour is alot of plants and the entrance probably isnt that much - would you even want to go?

I think its a great advertising opportunity mate.

If you where a large scale contractor you could throw a few men at it for free but a small builder in these times no its not possible I woulden't entertain it at all and they should not put you in that position. IMO.

mmmm, good point, but I do like gardening/plants/ flowers so would like to go to the show, owning the summer house is probably a long shot, it was the advertising that i thought was the best asset as Ryan says :)

yeh, Tatton park rhs is a nice show, not as good a Chelsea show but up there, but to build something special would take more time, and working for free its ahhhhhhh!!! what to do :/

To be honest Gaz, they didn`t put me in that situation, money `has` been mentioned and I`m going to see them tomorrow, but the last few words of today's conversation was a bit of a freebie!!! maybe she was just being cheeky, and yes as you know its a small building firm in hard times!! its a hard decision for me , Gaz( my work partner) said NO not for free!!!

Actually, the entrance fee is surprisingly expensive - but that is only relevant if you would have gone anyway, plus you will have spent two days there already and will have seen most of it anyway.

I'd not do it for free either - the thing is, even with all the free publicity you may get, how much extra business would youactually receive from it in the future? Exactly - you cannot say. And is this show somewhere that you would chose to advertise your business on the strenght that it would generate the sales for you?

That's a fair suggestion Gaz!! It sounds like they are open to negotiation and, as time is running out, will no doubt do a deal with you!
