I know i searched but couldnt really see it, but just want to know if there is a difference in a straight line!

nissan build the auto to be close as poss to the manual in spec .. 0>60 and top speed

under the right the conditions the auto can be just at fast if not a little better in striate line only

but this is all down to how the car is and driver ...

would say most of the time manual would be the better car ... think about it Race cars are not Full autos but Manual

and there must be a reason for it :)

Well hear something abt manual not staying on boost while changing. We're autos constantly stay on boost

I`ve got both matey (auto and manual) they are BOTH great boxes when running right :) but!!! I felt a dramatic difference when I converted from Auto to manual in my TT , it feels more of a drivers car in manual and definitely feels a LOT quicker!!! maybe its only a few tenths but those few tenths surely make the difference..... the same car before the auto swap absolutely destroyed my mates M3, so both are capable of some stunning drag times, I suppose it down to the driver preference!! but I would never swap my vert to a manual, just love the auto too much in that particular car :)

you've only got boost when your foot is down on the accelerator. in a manual you have to take your foot off to change up a gear (well actually you don't have to but you'll be bouncing off the rev limiter if you don't) and therefore the boost is dumped (either into the standard recirc system whereby it is reintroduced when you put your foot back down) or into the atmosphere if you have atmospheric BOVs and it is therefore lost (but you can get it back again pretty quick). The auto on the other hand shifts up without you having to take your foot off and therefore the boost is kept. Auto turbos have smaller internals to allow them to spool quicker because autos have longer gears (only 4 of them) and therefore won't accelerate as quickly if they shared the same turbos as a manual.

On the road I don't think the difference will be noticeable between a manual and an auto of same power and condition so don't worry about it!

Stock manual gearboxes also tend to be stronger than stock auto boxes (speaking from experience!)

Personally I loved the launch my Z gave when it was an auto, but I much preferred to have control over the gears. Acceleration response between flooring the throttle and proceeding forward is much more direct with a manual because the autobox doesn't have to 'think' and drop down a gear before you get anywhere.

I had auto, box went converted to manual and manual feels more quick to me and more exiting,

auto seems to be smooth and not feel that quick but it is.

The worse thing I found with auto zeds is u can be doing say 35mph one day and it would kick down and go like stink the next it wouldn't.

And if u was going round a bend put your foot down it would try to kill u and slide but when u wanna do it the fu#+er won't kick down lol.

In other words I find there unpredictable, if I wanna slide in manual leave it in 2nd if not leave it in 3rd or 4th.

But has a smooth drive I loved the auto, but allways go wrong too.

So you beat an m3 with an auto or manual?

Overall very interesting, i am really trying to get an manual at the momment. Now i am doubting if i want the comfort of autos. Last auto was terrible but then again could be because it just wasn't right. Any of your autos gave you a kick in the back on kickdown?

Beat/leathered/smashed/obliterated the M3 with my old Auto box!! along with boost controller, chip and a few other mods :)

Doesnt the m3 push around 380?

Wish mine was a manual. Just because in the Wet, when you go over 3500 revs, it tries to change down a gear, as though it wants to go flat out. where as in a manual, I would be shifting up, to prevent wheelspin. Keeping revs low as possible.

Yours must be a UK car then? The Jap autos have a power/hold button. The hold button is for in the wet so it keeps revs low.

Main part is auto never used to give me a kick in the back maybe mine wasnt running right. But how about yours?

Well it is an import lol, and yes I have that button, never knew what it was for though!

lmao. will try it out :P

You recommend overdrive on or off with Hold on?

I converted mine to manual, but do miss that 2nd gear kickdown a good autobox has.

As for m3 beemers..........kicked the asses of a few in mine, no problem :)

Depending on model of M3 and excluding E30's are they arnt that quick/so many models its hard to list:

E36 3.0 - 286bhp

E36 evo 3.2 - 321bhp

E46 343bhp

E46 CSL - 360bhp

E90/2 - 414bhp.

I suspect the car Daz had a run with was an E46.

Manual is best, surely the driver in our sort of cars wants to be in control (not in traffic)?

Ive have lots of GT cars and always fighted with auto boxes and certainly you dont have the same driving pleasure.

Sorry auto boys

well my 10 penneth........

didnt really want an auto, prefer manual "drivers car" and yea i do miss being in control and i guess u do miss a bit of performance not being in control and the tourque converter steals a bit. but then again i like the fact i can cruise around with the auto and the kick down does work.

But then again i think unlike some others ive read about my auto is working A1 and i do get a kick up the arse, but still miss the driving pleasure of a manual :)

the jury is still out, suppose ill have to wait til the box maybe goes tits up and decide then ?!?!?!?!?!?

Would love to have paddle shift tec in 300zx, you can change gears faster than a manual!

I like the manual better and is more of a drivers car. But in a straight line an auto would be a little quicker as shifts gears faster

I have all the rare bits you can't find :tongue:

The Auto is slower in all scenario's. It has less power, more weight and higher losses.

The difference is less in a simple straight line drag race, but is exaggerated in the real world, mostly due to the slippy Torque convertor, where you have lots of acceleration changes - Corners, roundabouts, overtaking ..etc

I dont agree with that, mine felt quicker on acceleration as an auto, just point and squirt.........was actually a bit disappointed when I initially converted to a manual box but have got used to it.performance difference isnt noticeable as auto turbos spool up faster.think it helps a lot on the condition of the autobox, mine changed seamlessly and the car pulled as though it had got a turbine under the bonnet it was so smooth with no jerky changes.
