Ok, I am toying with the idea of removing the a/c from my zed. I am looking to remove as much as possible from the engine to make it less busy and a bit more presentable. Now how much of a difference is there between having it and not? ( in terms of components in the bay? ).

I really enjoy having air con on my daily, but i reckon i can live without it on the zed. After all if it's hot then i can just whip off the targa's. Also another contribuing indecision on removing it is the fact that my zed has only done 48k, and i don't plan on putting mega miles on it. So would removing the air con have a massive effect on value?

Cheers in advance

Personally, if it's working, then I'd keep it!

It won't have much effect on the car's future value - that will remain down to condition - but for me, having the a/c is all part of the "GT car experience" and I'd never want to own a car without it. I have a daily driver too, but I do use my ZX to go on holiday or for sunny Sunday outings and TBH taking the targas out just makes me feel too hot on warm summer days - so they are no substitute for the a/c. Plus on a long motorway trip, having the targas out makes things too noisy and unpleasant once you get up to "certain" speeds.....

......I'm the same with my SLK - sure, having the roof down in great, but when the temperature reaches 26 or above, it's more comfortable to put the roof back up and bask in the coldness of the a/c.

Just my opinion though - if you're wanting a track car then remove it; but if you use it on the road for any length of time, keep the a/c.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I removed mine and it surprising how much it all weighs!, and I believe that removing the compressor has improved airflow to the passenger side turbo and keeps it cooler.i removed the condensor but left the electric fan in as a back-up for the viscous fan.

Personally, if it's working, then I'd keep it!

And while i respect Richards view on this issue I have the completely opposite view.

I dislike aircon. I always remove it from a Z32 and I dont use it on my daily driver even tho its fitted.

so as always its a waste of time asking for views on any forum cos you will never get the same answer from everyone:laugh:

So.... Your car-Your call:punk:

It never gets hot enough in Nottingham to warrant air con Lol,us southerners like it though.I kept mine as i dont bode well in high temperatures and sweat like a scouser in a spelling test !

Ive ditched mine on all my zeds. Loads of weight saved, tidier engine bay and it means i can relocate my fuse box to where the pump was. As for price well if someone is buying a zed because it has air con maybe they are looking for the wrong car and woud be better suited to a family saloon. Remove the belt and see if you notice a different in engine performance.

Personally i liketo remove as much as possible as it is less to go wrong and it makes the engine bay less cluttered.

This is something I've considered on and off for quite a while - but I'm told it involves a fair amount of work to get at all the bits required to do a proper job of it. I've recently had an N/A diff installed, which has reduced weight at the rear due to the Hicas loss whereas prior to that my car was almost exactly 50/50 front to back (it was weighed when my suspension was tuned). I wonder if an aircon removal will help restore the balance... Going from what Gonzo says I take it you can bin one of the pulleys and belts once the aircon has gone? Extra couple of ponies into the deal as well maybe?

most you need to remove is the rad and piping and such to get down to the air con condenser. The rest is pretty easy from there battery out too to get to the pipes but pretty straight forward all in :)

PMSL!!

its a bit like some big fat guy drinking diet coke for weight loss but still eating 5000 calories each day sitting on a couch watching TV doing feck all else thinking its gonna help - it wont. Not even a little bit.

If you are going to strip you car then sure - every little helps I guess, but in the grand scheme of things in a car like this the saving on its own is going to be negligable!

keep it IMO :)

Your main concern seems to be with engine bay aesthetics, but in that regards It will make very little difference. The Pump is mounted low down mostly out of view, and the Radiator and condenser are hidden under nose panels. Pipework and wiring is barely visible.

Miniscule performance advantage at the cost of having a comfortable cabin, seems like a stupid idea to me, can't understand it at all.

TBH thats what i wanted to know, Got a couple of weeks off work coming up and am planning on ripping out all the bits in the bay that i dont want/need.

Its a GT car not a sports car !! the air con uses about 5 hp if that, ive got nigh on 500 so do you really think id notice it not being on ffs, under hard acceleration the clutch gets dis engaged anyway. How much power do you think driving with the window down saps then when your car is like a parachute ? unless your tracking the car seriously i cant see any point in removing it.

LOL!!!

This is just another area where the two opposing sides are never going to agree.

Bit like Auto/manwell Targas/slicktops etc etc

And someone said we had no banter???????

I toyed with the idea for ages and always decided to keep it. When I had my engine rebuilt I was still adamant that I would keep it. Then it donned on me. In 10yrs ownership, I had never used it. Out it came.

Personally though, I would only remove it if I had the engine out. I wouldn't take it on as a project of it's own.

As said above, in the grand scheme of things, it just ain't worth it

There is still the element of tidying up the engine bay though rather than gaining an extra 5hp. I never used mine and never will. The LWB may be a GT but the shorties are a sports car :D

I'd of kept it if my car was a daily, but ditched it as it's not and also had the engine in and out lots of times! But agree it's not worth removing, just for the sake of it.

I removed it on my first zed and regretted it. When it gets as muggy as it can do in English summers and then it rains, there was nothing worse than being stuck in the zed in hot muggy rainy weather with no a/c.

I can understand doing it for track cars because weight is everything, but on a road GT car a/c is something it should have.... I mean look at James May in that vantage n24 in the alps!

Oh and if I wanted to buy a zed for a weekend car (not a track car) I would walk away if it didn't have a/c

I'd keep it even if it was a track car tbh, most trackday organisers don't allow you to drive with windows open and many require long sleeves. Is hot as **** in a closed cabin car on a hot day, really unpleasant.

Good point there :thumbup1:
