Hi Guys - new 300zx owner here - 1990 NA Auto Jap import

Hi guys

as a new 300zx owner (wanted one for many years and finally got round to getting a project to play with!) i am still getting used to all the things i need to keep an eye on!

here are just a few of the things i have noticed:

hesitation and stutter under take off from a standstill with hard acceleration (doesnt happen if you're gentle or from a rolling start)

oil pressure seems to fluctuate sometimes with no nasty sounds of bad oil circulation

strange hiss noise from the boot just after starting up as if something is pressurising? lasts about 2 seconds

if anyone has some pointers for these things i would appreciate it a lot - wouldnt want to give up on my dream car now i have one (was all i could afford at the time and thought it was worth what i paid!)

other than these few points it runs and drives fine

thanks all

Hesitation can be caused by a few things, check list as follows (in no particular order)

1 throttle balance incorrect

2 throttle position sensor incorrecty set

3 Ignition timing retarded

4 Det sensor circuit issue ( lower performance)

5 EGR valve not closing fully ( usually intermittently)

6 Air leaks resulting in fuel mixture issues.

Oil pressure fluctuation is a common problem with the gauge sender and is giving a false reading, fitting a new sender unit will solve it.

The noise in the boot is the ABS unit doing a system check nothing to worry about.

Having the engine checked over and set up with a diagnostic session is so much easier and you will be sure to get the best out of the engine both performance and fuel use, sure you have some close by you who are able to sort it for you inexpensively

thanks for the pointers Jeff TT.

started to look at a few things tonight to try and work through your list - thought i might check the state of spark plugs first to get an overall idea of ignition. plugs were clean but did smell strongly of fuel which i though strange - any thoughts?

thanks
