Dettonation (long, but dont be put off.....please ;) )

I think the car is detting, its a very long story.

The sound is like rattling a marble in a glass jar, is this detting?

Sometimes it happens when you start it up it knocks a few times then goes away.

It sometimes happens when pulling away quickly, but only rarely happens when foot well to the floor. Its very stange. Heres the story.....

the car was fine, not a problem in the world, went like a rocket, then this isfire started.

The car is due for 60k, so anyway, have the plugs changed, when the old ones were removed, the 2 rear ones were origonal platimun NGK ones, id guess from new, with blue bands round em. The front 4 were NGK ones, but were nickel jobs. I found it strange, but the car ran fine, so thought nothing more of it.

In went the champion platinum ones, these were deffinatly listed in the book as for fitting a nissan 300zx twin turbo, very shiny platinum tips, great. The guy did gap them, I couldnt tell you what to though i dont know.

That didnt work, the engine fired fine, but still missing.

So we check the PTU, there was a deffinate problem here, we cured it, was still missing.

checked for spark, but on putting the coil back in it got broke. Anyway we got new PTU and coilpack, fitted them still no closer to a cure.

Fetched the injector connection off, the connector retaining clip flew off somewhere, the connection was jammed with green crap, had it cleaned out, misfire has gone.

But now there rear-most bolt on the balance tube on the passenger side had the thread stripped, so the bolt aint in tight cos it plain wont go ! frown.gif

Anyway, after all this, we took it home, it was fine, couple of days later filled it up and it all started, its now been through 2 tanks, so bad fuel has been ruled out.

So...

How can i check it is actually detting? I think it is, i think its in safety boost, it doesnt seem as quick. Ill check the ECU, if its detting it shoudl come up with code 34 right?

If it is detting, then what the hell could be causing it? bad plugs, bad injector connection, bad plug gap, vacuum leak???

thanks for help guyZ smile.gif

I hope its simple and no damage has been done, cant stop using the car, it the only one running atm, and the engine getting dead wont help wink.gif

ThanX smile.gif

the ECU won't show 34 if the engine is actually detting.

It will only show 34 if the detsensor or wiring to it is stuffed.

I think you have a (serious) vacuum leak somewhere...

Check all hoses connected to the balance tube and replace the rubber O-rings if you haven't already. (or use some liquid gasket)

And make sure you have the rights spark plugs. (PFR6B-11B)

Check the o-rings are seated correctly on the balance bar. They can get 'nipped' in the gap when you put it on and have the opposite effect of sealing it...
