At around 4k revs in third gear the car seems to stutter. Not sure hat it is though, perhaps the fuel cutting out??? I was on boost at the time but nothing major. (wasn't exactly flooring it).

Anyone had this or have an idea what it could be?

Not fixed yet...... Problem still ongoing

Waiting to get to Jeffs for the fuel pressure test and also resistance test on the injectors

Right, I drove to work this morning and everything was completely fine (really nice day here).

It boosted fine when cold and when engine was up to temp.

It also did that last week when it was fine and then not.

I might have a MAF and another air filter sitting around, is it worth changing them and driving for a couple of days?

yes.... but your idle is too high!!!!!!! that will not help things in the long run...

follow Steams advise and clean the IAA, it's not hard to get it off... but you will most likely have to get/make a new gasket for it....

once you get that sorted and the idle adjusted down to the right level you can get some more readings and see to the O2....

Okies, I'll clean that and turn the idle down a little to 750. And take another reading with the engine up to temperature

Thanks guys, changed the idle as best I could but it's a little up and down but you can only see it on the datascan. The cars clocks look fairly static. I will do the IAA when I get the chance. How does this look now?

I revved the car up to a bit over 2k as well and the rh O2 sensor wasn't moving much. Will put a video up later showing that.

Do I need to drive it with them unplugged? It's been driving great today so seems to be when it's wet or damp

Mine done this once after a heavy rainful. It's never done it since but then i try not to drive it to much in the wet. Do you have the plastic guard under the MAF? you may find you are getting a wet MAF. Best to take it out on a wet day and see if the fault come sback if so then something is getting wet.

Dave - I do have the splashguard but its cut for the air filter

Videos as promised:

Yep, vodkashots is running his without the o2's connected at the moment. The ECU will compensate for them not being connected and run a basic map. If the car is fine with them unplugged then the chances are that one or both are failing and sending weird readings to the ECU; which might be the reason for the erratic running. This is guess work by my and so may not be the case but you won't damage the car doing it.

But it may well be that as Dave said; your getting moisture sucked into the MAF. A wet MAF will make the car run like it's chewing a bag of nails.

P.s. It's still worth cleaning the IAV out and resetting the base idle to 750..

That's certainly what I think. Think I need to see if I can get a new splash guard. I do sometimes wonder if the guard hinders air going in though

I had the same problems this spring. In the end I found a leak to the turbo, a bad gasket on top of the turbos from the intercooler line i think. Have you checked for vacuum leaks ?

(I ended up replacing and switching parts off and on again. MAF, Coils, spark plugs, ptu, fuel pressure regulator, adjusting the tps, checking timming. In the end it was a vacuum leak causeing wrong air/fuel mix.)

I stuck air through it the other day and couldn't find any, but having said that the car does sometimes cut out after flooring it then if the clutch goes down for long enough, such as coming to a roundabout. Wish I could do a smoke test.

I definitely think it's the maf getting wet though as when it's drive the car runs nice and boosts great

when you say, "stuck air through it" do you mean pressurise or just pump air in to the system?

if you managed to block off the air filter/maf inlet, you can use some smoke matches (cheap on ebay of from plumbing store)..

if you haven't got a plug to block off the air intake i can help sort you out with something...

I had some running issues a while ago like this, my idle was erratic though. Jeff sorted it out by changing a combination of things.

The throttle alignment was out, and one of my o2 sensors was ****ed. Its been unplugged since then and runs fine.

I also had a hks twin mushroom filter fitted without a maf sensor in, so thats been replaced with a single cone filter with a maf.

The twin filter is for sale if anyone wants to make an offer?

  • 7 months later...

i have a tt import,at 4/4.5k it splutters and coughs like being on a limiter then clears when reving in neutral, under load it won't pull past 4k.the maf was getting wet changed that made an improvement to the running checked tps, changed plugs, checked pretty much everything else ive got a hunch it could be a vac leak somewhere its just finding it

I'm pretty sure it was a wet maf for me. Never does it in the dry
