JWT Chip - reprogramming or swap

I got my JWT ECU at the same time as the new JWT turbos/injectors were bought so the programming was done by JWT to match that setup. Since then I will have added decat pipes, larger intercoolers, boost controller (instead of JWT supplied boost jets) and I am running on Optimax fuel. Finally the engine was replaced with one from a manual UK 1994 car, the original was an auto Jap import 1991.

1. Do I need to get the JWT chip re-programmed and can a good UK tuner do this to the JWT chip or does it have to go back to JWT?

2. To save this happening again would I be better off replacing the JWT chip with a Unichip or SE nissan chip and having the chosen new one re-programmed to suit the current state of the car?

The chip will compensate for decat, intercoolers and should be fine with the extra boost from avc-r in combination with the JWT turbos. If not I'd complain to JWT as that is the expected setup for the turbos he sold you.

I don't want to start a big thing here, but I would not reccomend se for a new chip.

Disconnect the ecu overnight after an upgrade or it will take a few runs before it compensates fully.

The JWT chip should have fuel maps on it for the different boost levels you run, regardless of what size intercoolers you run, it has already been mapped for your bigger injectors and turbos, I doubt if you need it remapped. Email JWT to make sure though.

Jez - what about fueling? The JWT ecu supplied by Stillen may have been setup for US RON fuel? I only wound the boost up to 1.3bar as I found that 1.4bar gave obvious detting, and the engine went bang after 6 months with a holed valve, etc. Neither I nor mechanics working on the car had ever heard any detting so it was a real surprise to us. I now run 1bar but that is crazy for the money spent so far on upgrades, it must be able to handle more boost than 1bar without compromsing the engine? Maybe I am being overly critical but some people seem to have been happier with a chip from a UK than with a JWT one. I know I have seen posts to say that people have started with a JWT chip and then swapped to another re-programmable one later and seen improvements in performance.

Due to the engine swap the battery was off for many days so the ECU will have refreshed itself. I have tried emailing JWT before and never got a response, initially after the new JWT ECU was fitted and I was buying an HKS EVC to ask what settings they recommended and then again after the engine went bang. No reply. This is why I am considering going for a new chip (Unichip, SE or ???) and have it mapped and the engine tuned to match my setup rather than JWT's way of mapping.

hi,

the problem with most chips as i see it is that they are relativly fixed in what they do there is a little scope for adjustment but not loads!! so the only thing as far as i can see if your car is outside the scope of the chip(test with air/fuel ratio meter on the road)if it falls outside the chips scope(either weak or rich in places)[they both lose power]buy an adjustable chip because each engine is different even two built side by side using the identical parts built by the same person can produce upto 30 or 40 bhp difference and what would suit one engine in terms of fuel and timing would be miles out on the other one(i know i used to build race engines for single seat racers)

the problem is that adjustable chips(or modules) don't come cheap!!!!!! look on racelogics site the people that make traction control systems,i think its in trade enquires(not sure now but its on there site just have a look around there)

if you have doubts about the JWT ECU, you could buy a Apexi S-AFC or HKS AFR to adjust the amount of fuel for peace of mind.

With these small computers you can add/decrease fuel at certain rpm points.

However these fuel computers are best set up by a knowledgable tuner that knows what he's doing.

Apart from that..the JWT ECU is super rich at WOT, so if the car is detting, there's probably another cause ( overheating problems, bad fuel, bad fuelfilter, etc)

John, If you are not getting replies to your e-mails and still want to talk to them, I would recommend calling JWT by 'phone. When I was arranging to send my ECU to them I called them twice, and both times was put straight through to Jim Wolfe and given the answers to my queries. Jim appears to handle all customer phone queries direct and immediately. They are 8 hours behind us, so try after 5pm. (US 619-442-0680).

Jv, the JWT chip shouldn't be able to be programmed in UK, but i'm certain someone out there can, i ran the JWT and found it quite good, but have to admit found the SE one a bit better, having said that though, unless you visit SE personally and fine tune the chip on the rollers, by mail order you actually get a chip which is made for an engine of similar spec to yours from previous customers mappings, so not 100% ideal, i use an AFR to fine tune the fuel linked up to a led monitor for the mixture, so at least it is more applicable to my engine, my advice in your situation, is sell your JWT chip and go for the Unichip, more cash, but once fitted is very easy to be mapped to suit your engine entirely and as often as you carry out your mods too, plus there a number of tuners out there who are qualified to do Unichip, so you may not have far to travel to have it done, where abouts are you ? Dave griffis in Bristol, really knows how to set these things up.

hope this helps some

Hi Smithy, I have really decided that having a JWT chip here in the UK with a heavily modified car is not as easy as having a chip from a UK supplier/tuner. As I am north of Birmingham nowhere is close to me really. I have decided to go to SE for a days tuning in early September after the new intercoolers are fitted. I will see what they say first and how the car runs, then I will make a decision on whetehr I need to replace the JWT chip or if it is ok for where I am at with modifying the engine, etc. Thanks for all the advice chaps it gave me the clarity to make a decision.

My mechanic uses a stethascope connected to his engine block to listen for det. Just because you can't hear detonation over the sound of your engine, road noise and exhaust doesn't mean it isn't happening.

Yeh I know that know. An expensive lesson.
