Fuel Pump

How many people have upgraded their fuel pump to support other upgrades? A couple of tuning shops have said that it is a recommended upgrade for raising the boost above 1bar. Technical type comments?

The pump of the Z32TT is VERY strong (255ltr/hr) and is sufficient for 700 to 800bhp.

The injectors are the main bottleneck in the Z...not the fuelpump.

You can use this formula to calculate the minimal flow your pump should be able to deliver:

Fuel needed=(size of injector) x (number of injectors) x (injector duty cycle)

So for a Z with 555cc injectors and with a maximum of 80% inj. dutycycle you need at least 160ltr/hr

Info I have seen is that the standard fuel pump is very good and can supply sufficient pressure/volume for up 500bhp and above.

Thanks that is what I thought but when I got the same message from 3 different tuners, all saying running more than std boost & 555 injectors means you have to have a more powerful fuel pump fitted. Damn I really hate people trying to rip me off. I even checked with Nissan and they said the same, the pump is fine unless you are going for mega power. Thanks my mind is now back "at rest" mode.

Even though I've read a million posts on upgrades over the years, that garage at silverstone (forgot the name) almost had me convinced I need a new pump. And new fuel reg to match of course! They claimed it was 100% necessary and they wont upgrade much without one.

It's either a way to make money or a way to get you to spend more! They pulled out a chart and looked up the 300zx and said, oh yeah, you're gunna need a bigger pump than that.

"Bull"

Look at the specs of the race 300s in the states, a few with very high bhp. Does anyone have a new pump?

You might consider getting the pump tested just to ensure it is still working within spec. The performance of any mechanical thing can reduce over time.

I didn't need to change my pump when my Supra was modded but when you are spending £0000's what a few hundred on a new pump.

Yeah, but a few hundread on a new pump + new regulator a labour will add up to £500 in no time and you could say this about a lot of engine parts?
