ok, in an effort to make sure I actually use the car, and because I've always wanted to do it, I've signed myself up for this year's TimeAttack. I'll be in Club RWD class, and I imagine against some very stiff competition from what i can see from previous years.

Never done anything like this before, just a couple of track days, so it's going to be a huge learning curve :crying:

Dates are below, and if you can make it then please come along and say hi, and if you're unlucky I'll rope you in to help too!

I'll keep this thread updated with progress

Wish me luck!

Will do. I'd like to do brighton speed trials, but will see how it goes time wise and see how she performs on the qtr mile through the year. Not kidding about on the door step, I live right on the front, so last year it was a case of walking to the end of the road and I'm there!

Dyno session yesterday, was going very well, though again I've had to abort the mapping.

This time due to the turbo's. As I'd suspected they were spooling a bit later than they should, which is something I can live with, but once we started to roll onto the power runs at partial throttle we spotted a problem. A run with only half throttle was hitting 16psi, but then boost creeping to 24psi by redline.

I'd fixed the boostcreep issue, so I'm 99% sure that the Turbo Company I used have not exactly matched the turbo's I had before, hence the spool and boost creep differences.

With Jimmer on holiday, and Jubilee weekend I don't see how I can fix this for Knockhill :( :(

Bring it to me over the weekend I'll drop it off at Dan's on Wednesday morning and he might be able to get it done. Of course I would have to ask him if he can fit it in first but he's your best chance James.

turn your boost gain down and the boost setting and make sure you have a Max boost limit set to what ever u dont want it to go over ...

Boost gain is for how fast/hard it comes in having this set to high gives you boost creep

Boost setting thats just your desired boost

Boost Max set ... if u dont want to run any more than 18psi ( guessing ) set it to that ...

no mater what the turbos try and do it will not go over

assuming u have a decent boost controller

Bob, thanks will make a few calls today and give you a shout later.

Mark,

This is all wastegate pressure. I have boost solonoid controlled through the ECU, and what you've descibed as boost creep is actually a spike. Boost creep is where the wastegate can't bleed off enough air when open to keep the boost under control.

Well I'm in Scotland! Took 13 hours to get here from Brighton, got stuck on M25 for an hour, took 2hours to clear birmingham and the M6 was painful

Anyway, there's a test session this afternoon then timeattack tomorrow, come along if you're in the area

Do you know what time the test session is?

Well, I went along to Knockhill today but the only Zed I saw was this one, when I arrived it was on the trailer and was later driven away.

Is it Jaffa's and if so .....what went wrong?

Yep Its Jaffa/james car.. Im back home in Nottingham now. James isnt home to Brighton yet.

I will let him update the thread when he is ready.

But briefly we got a little practise in on sat but didnt run the car today due to some issues with the engine.

I briefly saw BigC on Sat but we were a little busy/stressed at the moment he turned up. Apologies for not being able to chat

No apology needed, circumstances beyond your control I'm sure

That's one hell of a long drive for something to go wrong, I hope that you both have better luck the next time.

Andy

I hope it not another engine problem thats going to cost loads +vat!

James you poor bugger, when you going to catch a break!

Hi guys,

No apologies needed Pete, you guys did look fairly busy. I have to say, i quite enjoyed my Saturday. Nice wee day out with the wee man. Ive been to many big events at Knockhill but never the Saturday practice day. Nice and chilled (for spectators at least) and free entry :)

The zed looked awesome on the track, a great site. It obviuosly had some troubles, nothing too serious i hope.

I tell you what, it must make for an extremely expensive hobbie. There seems to be a lot of big spending competition.

I grabbed a few pictures, so i'll upload them in a minute or two

Apologies for the picture quality....taken on the iphone.

Some of the zed...

time to revive this thread!!

Car is back on the road, I've missed the Brands Hatch round as car wasn't going to be ready, then missed the double header at Anglesey due to funeral plans for someone in the family taking over.

Anyhow, one fresh MOT later, picked up the car from Jimmer last Sunday, and promptly drove 400 miles to bed it all in - how's that for a vote of confidence! Didn't miss a beat :)

Knockhill was a painful weekend, drove 1700 miles over the course of 4 days, to do 2 brief sessions on track. Popped a boost hose on the first run, then overheated on the second...

sorted everything out after overheating and the engine was knocking so that was the end of the weekend

In an effort to stop blowing up forged engines (get's a bit expensive as that was my 3rd in 12mthns), I picked an old engine from Slick Pete that was a non runner but had good compression. I stripped it down to the short block at Jimmers while he worked on other cars, then handed it over to the master to reassemble with my bits on it. Started up with no problems. I've returned to stock viscous fan and stock oil cooling to trouble shoot the issues I had (though I'm pretty sure I've figured out the cause now).

Last week I had a dyno session and now have a full map on base boost, only running 420rwhp, and resisted the urge to turn up the boost to preserve the bottom end. despite VTC not working, the car zips round to the limiter nicely and is fun to drive again. Have a shake down session at Brands Hatch on thursday evening to make sure that reliability has returned, then Trax on the Sunday. Between the two I'll either prove it's ready to compete or blow it up :)

The other good news is that I've bought myself a GoPro, so should have some footage to share, wish me luck!

Great news James.

Im looking forward to a quick few laps with you on Sunday.

Keep us updated on your session at Brands. DONT blow it up!

Bit of a long day yesterday (spotting a trend !)

First off, down to Abbey Motorsport for conrner weighting and full alignment.

Car Weighted in at 1371Kg with nearly full tank. Lost 96Kg since last time it was weighed there so heading the right direction

Trundled over to Brands from there, and did the evening track session. First time at Brands so an interesting track to learn, so excuse any obious mistakes as I try to learn the track! Only did the one session though, after coming in for a cool down, it appear the drivers side turbo oil feed decided to split :( Started up to go back out on track and got smoke, pulled up and after letting engine cool some more I identified the leak by the jet of oil coming from it when engine was turned on! No damage to engine, but still meant I had to be recovered home.

Looks fantastic, sorry to hear about the issues.

i could watch that video all day. i bloody love z's on track. cant wait to get mine back out there.

one thing i did notice was at the end of your track time you just pull up and turn it off. how come you didnt let it idle for a while and cool down? i allways thought this is what your ment to do with a turbo car to give the tubbies chance to cool down?

becuase he had already done a slow down lap. You dont need to let the car idle, you just need to cool the turbo's for the last part of your journey by taking it steady.

replaced the turbo oil line over the weekend, ordered a special stubby spanner to help (as advised by Jimmer) and we're motoring again :)

It was a braided line but seems to have suffered from heat fatigue from previous failures.

Snetterton is this weekend, another double header with a race on Saturday & Sunday with different track layouts.

This will be the end of the season, and per this thread, it hasn't exactly gone to plan. I'll be there both days, car's only running wastegate boost pressure to see how things go and to preserve the stock bottom end (well, try to at least!)

If you're in the area, come along, should be fun!
