Kind of difficult without me even seeing it yet but am told its got a leak on the hicas !! is this a common thing with hicas ? and is there anything in particular it will be ?

Can anyone give me a rough idea of cost for an auto to manual convertion ? diy and garage ?

I think zedworld charge 1600 for the full manual conversion, which if you have the cash I'd recommend because you get a full guarantee with it.

Not sure about the hicas could be as cheap as a hose or as expensive as a seal meaning a new unit, as you say without seeing the leak its difficult to diagnose

manual conversions arnt hard just long winded. and in reguards to teh hicas leak, the hicas and power steering are the same source of fluid so both need to be investigated. if it leaks at standstill the its probally on the low pressure side of things ie the felxible stuff. rtaher than the metal ended ones. if it only leaks with the engine on then its likly the opposite. best thing to do is look for the red droplets. or areas of gunk. common failure points are the front seal of the p/s pump, the high pressure line at the bottom of the engine(the metal corrodes) the join between the pas pot feed and the pump, lots of heat and movement i suppose takes its toll. mine was actually leaking from the o rings under the feed tbe that feeds both halves of the pump. hth

You can usually pick up a manual conversion kit for around the 500-600 mark but I've heard the conversion CAN be a pain if you've not got access to a lift or pit and would take upwards of a full day to complete, not trying to put you off its probably worth a go tbh but I'd rather save and get jeff to do it lol

i paid £400 for a complete manual conversion (down to the last nut and bolt), and added another £400 on a new clutch and flywheel and on top of that theres the cost of fluids etc.To be honest i wouldnt want to do one without a ramp, as it makes life so much easier and i know a man that can fit a complete manual conversion for you at a reasonable price if you like, its a mate of mine whos done 3 now :)

there is usually someone on here with a manual conversion for sale, and usually a better bet than ebay as you have a better chance of getting a decent box off a club member.

hi guys whats involved in hicas removal ?

with regards to gbox think il just leave that job tell after the summer !! im just abit worried i might not enjoy an auto but saying that iv never had a big power auto.!!

I was the same when I bought mine, but it's definitely one of the best auto boxes I've driven, obviously it's not the same as a manual but I do a lot of driving in the firms van (22k last year) and it's nice to get in and let the car do all the work for you. Try it you might like it

i got zedworld to do my conversion, as they give guarentee with box, one piece lightweight propshaft, and 25% upgrade to clutch. and it was done in under a week and i didnt have to ruin anything :D

Ken,

the leak i think is a hose right up to top somewhere...i found it hard to pin point it. You'll see it on arrival as i topped it up with fluid.

Only leaks when running...obviously.

Cheers sam , right up to top.of the hicas ya mean ? sorry im not sure of hicas an wer its located etc

The main part of Hicas is the 'steering rack' bolted to the rear subframe, which is connected by pipes to a pump mounted under the bonnet in the area next to the powersteering fluid reservoir in the engine bay.You can delete the hicas by removing the rack at the back and replacing it with a hicas eliminator (driftworks do a popular one), fitting a powersteering pump off an n/a (with a tt pulley) along with a n/a powersteering fluid reservoir (i believe you can modify tt ones as well) and you can remove all the pipework as well.

What he said - pretty much - the auto 'box in the 300zx is actually very good considering the age of the car. Fortunately Nissan made changes to the engine and matched it to the slush-box so that overall performance should not suffer. Sure, modern auto boxes have moved on since the 1990s; but I still enjoy driving my auto ZX. Yes, I will one day have it converted no doubt - but only when the current 'box dies!! Hell I spent £1400 rebuilding the auto box on my old red ZX, and even though it was done well, perhaps the manual conversion would have been a better investment... Live and learn I guess!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
