Morning all! As most of you know my Z is my daily drive. Got a problem that occured a few days ago, everything was fine then when I went to start the car one morning I noticed I had no display on my aircon or clock.. Also the Front wipers won't work!!! The following day it was still dead but on a drive went over a bump and everything Sprung back into life and started working again! Great I thought!!!

Then on leaving work the other day nothing at all again and now it still dead... Im assuming A relay has died on the back of the fusebox next to the drivers accelaerator pedal.. Anyone know what colour relay controls those accesories so I can swap it and bring everything back to life??? Thanks for anyone who can help me!!!

Its possible your accessories relay has a short on the board where it plugs in, may have had water ingression in the past damaging the terminals or causing corrosion not making contact. Also next to the fuse board nearer the door, is the TCU, time control unit, which controls the intermittent wipers, light dimming, dash lights etc, might be worth checking the plug to it or even taking the casing off to check the tracks on the board.

Will find a diagram and post it up

Thanks Groover! Yeah a diagram would be great!! Had a targa drain leak last yeah so fixed the tube as the fuse box got soggy then but dried it all off with a hair dryer and had no probe for a year till now!!! Pod is completely dead and won't even beep when pressing buttons.. clock also dead!!

Well finally sorted it! It did turn out to be a dead relay on the back of the fuse board! One of the blue ones with the common 25230 serial number on it.. One relay controls the blower motor and the other controls the power to the accessories. My one was very corroded and when putting a voltage through the bottom pins it wasn't clicking in or out... Swapped it for the blue Sub Relay in the engine bay and everything is back to life, aircon pod, clock and now the wipers work!!

Big thank you to Grooverfor the wiring diagram and for pointing me in the right direction! Your a star!! Hope this thread can help someone else one day if they have this trouble...

Just daft that Nissan had this setup reliant on one relay powering up the wipers and aircon pod at the same time.. I put it down to, there Japanese that designed it and they can...

Here is the old offending relay:

Good job there are plenty of Nissans in scrap yards that use this 25230 relay.. Had a look yesterday and things like micras. nissan pathfinders, primeras, 200sx are just some i came across!!

Glad you got it sorted John, i would suggest checking your targa drain pipe, normally the biggest culprit with water down the back of the board. Its a known problem regarding the plastic tube not connected or the metal pipe corroded as it goes down to the sill area, hence any water down the drain tube ends up at the back of the relay board.

Yeah, sorted the targa drain tube last year when it was dripping over the fuse board and causing my left indicator to stay on perminantly even when the keys were removed from the ignition!! Lots of nasty fizzing happening back then and my battery went flat!! Replaced the targa drain tube with some hose pipe, its still attached and connected to the bottom drain nipple. Nice and dry down there!! Always worth checking again tho!

quick one does anybody know what the sub fan relay actually does?

It controls the electric fan that sit's in front of the aircon rad... Not really needed as if this ever comes on then your Water temp has exceeded it's maximum safe temp and your engine is about to go into meltdown!!! You can get plenty of the 25230 blue relay's from other Nissan cars in scrap yards... Common relay that loads of Nissan car's use.

All I can say is what a pig of a job to do! I am sure I have the same issue, so have disconnected all the front wired sockets, and have given up for the day trying to get to the rear of this fuse panel. You need to be a contortionist to get this deep into the footwell!

Will be continuing tomorrow, but what an effing stupid place for a fuse panel! The person who did this youtube video must have been a talented to get a camera and screwdriver in this small space. Any tips anyone to help me tomorrow?

Its needed for the aircon to stop the gas reaching stupid pressures, leave it out at your peril.

that's my vid Greg and I sympathise with you! I made it while I had a buzzing relay issue. It wasn't too bad to do once I was in position, i.e. balancing half my upper body weight on my head! sore neck for the next few days. :(

Easier to take the seat out to get all the gubbins in the fuse area out, gives your body more room to stretch out

Well I managed to get in there and get the fuses all out for a check - and they all looked clean with no visible corrosion on any pins. The area is completely dry, even after this mornings rain so I am not worried about water ingress. Anyway, I cleaned each fuse and their pins as best I could as I thought I might as well whilst this deep in the car, but to no avail. I think I might have to just replace the offending accessories relay to see if it has gone. I have seen one on ebay which I may get unless anyone has a spare or wants to sell me one they have?

Also has anyone a picture of the TCU as discussed above, as I want to check this out as well tomorrow.

Obviously drivers side kick panel as the pic below is from a leftie

Forgot to mention that I ditched my Aircon and all it's gubbins!

So, I have replaced the offending relay and now I have air and wipers again. The odd thing now is I still have no clock and when I turn on my lights, the screen on the LH dash pod dims.

Any ideas. Perhaps another fuse has gone?

Mine does that and dims..... I thought it was because at night it doesn't need to be as bright to see it as it does in daylight......???

Same as head units for audio, dim at night......

Get a multimeter and test that the clock has an earth and live going to it......

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!

The LH pod display and clock will dim when you turn your side lights on, if you cant see them enough, then turn up the dimmer on the right hand pod.

The clock may be duff as its not uncommon, there is a clock fix here:http://www.twinturbo.net/nissan/300zx/tech/clock/clock.html, accessories fuse does the clock iirc.

Yup - Jim is dead right......

.....My electric fan stopped working last year and I left it as the car did not over-heat without it. Although it did run a little warmer when stuck in traffic for a long time - until after a few months my a/c stopped working.

I took it to JeffTT and the result was that the a/c fluid had overheated and the increased pressure popped the rear seal on the compressor - causing all the gas to escape. So, as well as a new electric fan, it cost me a replacement compressor and an a/c re-gas....

Richard:sweatdrop:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
