Speedo/power steering fault...

Just personal curiosity really. Every now and then (about once every 2 months or so) when I start up my car and pull away the speedo won't work and the steering will be real heavy. All I do to rectify it is switch the engine off and back on. Just wondered what was causing it...

its most likly a dirty speed sensor, or a poor connection on a speedo converter if yours is an import. mine does it when its wet and yuck if i use it too much, once i hit about 50 it pops back in. and stays working.

How would that have an impact on the power steering though? I could be wrong but I think it tends to happen more when I'm parked on uneven ground...

I remember the very first time it happened the Hicas light came on at the same time. It's never come on during this fault since though.

The steering is speed sensitive so to give more feel at high speed and enable easier parking,ie a light feel when needed.
