learn some thing every day thought they were air baffles so when you slam the boot you don't build up air pressure

could be that as well. lol

I know that they are just a plastic box with a filter in it.

well if they aint there you would have 2 holes either side wouldnt that stop condensation too

Could do, they might also be for allowing air to circulate in the boot. Reduce smells etc. but I'm guessing now.

You're all right - they are just air vents.....

.....but they are there to enable fresh air-flow through the whole cabin. As you know, fresh air comes into the cabin through the dash vents - even with the blowers off the forward motion of the car helps draw it in. In many old cars, it was normal to see the air exit vents in the C-pillars (eg Cortina/Mk1 or 2 Cavalier etc).......

.....but as cars have become more streamlined and (well) modern, it has become normal to conceal the exit vents in the rear wings under the bumpers...

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

They,re air vents to let air out of the car , if you put you blower on and these weren,t fitted your ears would pop like on a plane as there,s nowhere for the excess air pressure to go and it would just build up !

Yep! ide go with that. the blowers would really struggle to push air into the car without them :-)

they often have a simple one way valve built in to stop drafts coming in.

Air pressure is right im not sure about pressure the air vents make I think its more to do with closing the massive boot.

If there was nowere for the air to go when you slam the boot down you could (in theory) blow a window out same principle as trying to close a door quickly in a room with the Windows shut its a lot harder to close the door, if you open the window it suddenly becomes a load easter in a smallish room anyway.

Iirc they have a rubber flap that acts as a 1 way valve to only let air out

I had to take these out of both sides when I had the back end welded the other week.you can only remove them with the rear bumper off as they slide in from underneath and are held in by four screws at the bottom and one at the top in the boot........and as said they are for ventilation :)
