Trying to get Leo's car to idle and it's having none of it, last thing he changed was the spark plugs we have changed them back for the old ones to see if that would make a difference, we have changed ptu for a known working one and it's still doing it, tested the timing and that's ok just seem to splutter then refuse to run tested the Cas and all injectors were clicking away it's kinda got us stumped

seems its not firing on all cylinders matey

wanted to get the timing set up properly when we first got it up to temp it was sitting at 30btdc on the crank pulley, but as its a unorthodox we wanted to make sure the mark was in the correct place, it wasn't updating on consultz though for some strange reason. so we left it as it was, with consults saying 15 and the mark on the pulley saying 30?

well i suppose we can get the icv off and give it a clean.

Just an update on this. I've cleaned the MAF and the TPS, the car will idle now. It's still misfiring badly though. It seems as if it's only firing on the drivers side... I've swapped the coils, spark plugs should be ok, can hear the injectors ticking and the plug into the coils is getting the right voltage but the three cylinders on the passenger side don't seem to be firing (no change in running when you remove a coil pack plug, plus the engine is only heating up on the drivers side...). Could this still be PTU related?

Ian popped over yesterday and we tried his PTU, although it didn't seem to make much difference. I'm going to swap the plug today as it was pretty green and see if that makes a difference.

with consults saying 15 and the mark on the pulley saying 30?

don't use conzult to do the timing... use a timing light.... conzult will always say 15.... (ask Jeff if you don't believe me)...

Set the timing to 15 with the timing light....

Have you tried running the car with the maf disconnecred? It will run in a default mode but wont rev above 2k

yeah we had my draper timing light, the lower pulley was a unorthodox one, there was a mark on it, but wasnt sure if it could be trusted, when the timing was set to 15dbtc on the pulley, the car just wanted to die, when set back to 30btdc it idled but rough as old nails, this was after the engine was brought up to temp by holding it at around 1k rpm by hand. id never set the timing just by using consults.

I've now swapped the PTU plug and it's idling a bit smoother, still misfiring badly but not as bad as it was. My wiring skills are pretty awful so I wouldn't be surprised if it would improve further with better wiring. It makes me think it's something to do with the PTU harness and the PTU...

I just tried it with the MAF disconnected and it was running smoother. Not great by any means, but not juddering or misfiring as badly.

You have probably got a couple of little faults which will make you zed run like crap. I had the same thing with mine and after speaking to jeff he explaned that the ecu will over compansate when you have minor faults, such as maf and will over fuel the engine to try and protect it. Mine was a combination of a bad maf and ptu wires rubbing through on the alternater belt. Also check for air leaks as its very easy to leave a jublee undone

Quick update: All the injector connections were really green. Cleaned them up and it's a bit smoother, still misfiring... It'll hold a steady idle now, but the passenger side cylinders still seem to not be firing properly - the engine heats up much more on the drivers side than the passengers (pass. side stays fairly cold actually). I've checked coil packs and injectors, they're all fine (getting correct resistance etc...). I've not checked to see if I'm actually getting a spark yet. Will have a second pair of hands with me tomorrow so can do that then...

I can't find any vacuum leaks, all the hoses seem fine, clips done up tight.

May have to bite the bullet and get her booked into zedworld...

Another update on this: I've been out of the country for the past six weeks so haven't had a chance to get this resolved. I just had Green Flag out to look at it as I figured it was worth a shot given that I have free breakdown cover with my bank. The guy reckoned that the misfire was caused by tappets? His opinion was that it was a loose/misplaced tappet. I have no idea about tappets so don't know if that's a possibility?

Either way, I think it's time to call Jeff...

1st thing you need to do mate is cancel your subsciption with green flag and hope that dude they sent goes back to working in Asda

if it was a tappet ... that these engines dont have and like most modern ones too ... you would have a constant Tap tap tap tap tap tap sound that would change with RPM

the Nissan have hydraulic valves even if these was sticking or blocked the valve still opens/shuts ok just would give bad sounding engine

Luckily it's free with my bank account!

The guys' first guess was a coil pack (which I'm pretty sure it isn't) so I guess he was just guessing! Thanks anyway, it's booked into Zedworld on Tuesday so hopefully I won't be without my Z for too much longer!

leoE just check the regs on your green flag / bank .. think its 10miles only ( natwest ) gold ...

but best to get some better cover

Yeah it is only 10 miles, they wanted £4 per extra mile! I'm using the guy that Jeff has recommended to get me up to Zedworld...

Seem to remember someone having a similar problem not so long back,

I think it turned out to be the connections to the fuel injectors had been mixed up.

Maybe worth a look.
